Man Kills 57 Year-old Father For Ritual in Abia

Abia Police Command late Tuesday confirmed the killing of a 57-year-old, Mmaduka Ogbonna by his son, Chinalu Ogbonna, 27 years old at Amuzukwu in Umuahia North LGA.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka disclosed this in a statement she issued late Tuesday.

Chinaka in the statement said, “Yes we got a report today at about 0800hrs at CPS Umuahia.

“It was a report of a murder case involving Mmaduka Ogbonna, a 57-year-old male, allegedly killed by his son, Chinalu Ogbonna, 27 years old at Amuzukwu in Umuahia North LGA.

“Detectives from CPS Umuahia visited the crime scene and found the deceased’s lifeless body with his left eye gouged out.

“The suspect, Chinalu Ogbonna, a 27-year-old male residing with his father at Umu Eze Road opposite Junior Girls Secondary School Amuzukwu Ibeku, has been apprehended.

“Investigations revealed that he strangled his father to death and intended to use his left eye for money rituals.

“The corpse has been deposited at The morgue for autopsy, and exhibits have been recovered.

“The case is currently under investigation and will be charged to court.”

Some members of the community  who spoke on condition of anonymity said Chinalu Ogbonna is known to be involved in taking drugs, regretting, however, “he was his father’s favourite and the father protected him so much.”

LAGOS STATE TO REDUCE WORKDAYS FOR CIVIL SERVANTS

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced on Thursday that his administration is taking measures to alleviate the country’s cost of living crisis. As part of these efforts, the working days of public servants will be reduced, with lower-level civil servants working three times a week and those at levels 15-17 working four times a week, starting from next week.

Addressing the issue of rising food costs, the governor stated that his government will establish Sunday Markets in 42 identified markets across Lagos State, offering discounted prices on food items. Purchases at these markets will be limited to items worth up to N25,000.

In addition, Sanwo-Olu disclosed that a 25% reduction in transport services for the State Public Transport system (BRT, Train, Ferry) will commence this weekend. The governor is actively engaging with various transport unions to explore the possibility of reducing their fares.

Expressing empathy for the citizens, Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of leaders addressing socioeconomic challenges. He urged the private sector to contribute to the well-being of citizens, challenging them to play a role similar to their efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Protest In Ibadan Over High Cost of Living

Protest has broken out in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital over the high cost of living, food inflation and the current economic hardship being experienced in the country.

Staged in the Mokola area of the state capital, placard-carrying youths in their droves chanted songs to drive home their points.

Some of the placards have inscriptions such as ‘End food hike and inflation’, ‘The poor is starving’, ‘Tinubu, don’t forget your promises’, amongst others.

Armed policemen were seen at the protest scene even as demonstrators held the peaceful rally against the economic hardship in the land occasioned by the removal of petrol subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange windows.

The police had on Sunday warned that no breach of peace would be allowed during any protest in the state.

The protest in Oyo followed others in Kano, Minna, amongst others, over economic hardship occasioned by petrol subsidy removal, food inflation, and high cost of living.

Court Jails 3 Fraudsters in Akwa Ibom

In  Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital, a Federal High Court has convicted and sentenced three internet fraudsters (Yahoo-Yahoo) to different jail terms for offences bordering on criminal impersonation, internet fraud, and possession of fraudulent documents.

This is according to a statement by the Spokesperson of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Dele Oyewale on Monday.

According to the statement, the convicts – Abraham Itoro Sunday, Ezea Chidera Charles, and Udoh Christopher Gabriel were convicted by Justice Chigozie Sergius Onah upon their arraignment by the Uyo Zonal Command of  EFCC, on one-count separate charge bordering on cybercrimes.

“That you Abraham Itoro  Sunday ‘M’ sometime in 2023 within the jurisdiction of this honourable court did fraudulently impersonate Brian O’ Noel on Facebook with the intent to gain advantage for yourself and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 22 (2)(b)(I) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, prevention) Act 2015 and punishable under the same section,” the charge read.

 

They pleaded guilty to all the charges when they were read to them.

Based on their pleas, the Prosecution counsel – Enobong Ubokudom and Farida Bukar thereafter prayed the court to convict and sentence them accordingly.

Delivering judgment on Thursday, Justice Onah convicted and sentenced  Sunday and Charles to six months imprisonment each with an option of a fine of N200,000.00, while Gabriel bagged a five-month jail term with an option of a fine of N150,000.00.

The court also ordered that the three smartphones used by the convicts to perpetrate the crimes be forfeited to the Federal Government.

The statement noted that “the convicts started their journey to the Correctional Centre when they were arrested by operatives of the Uyo Zonal Command of the EFCC on November 22, 2023, at different locations in Afaha Atai, in Iko Eket Akwa Ibom State.

“Investigation showed that all the convicts impersonated foreigners by using their identities to defraud their victims.  While Charles fraudulently portrayed himself as ‘Molina Urovsky’ on Facebook, Sunday  portrayed himself as Brian O’niel  and Gabriel presented himself as Alexander Douglas on Instagram.”
