ASUU Set to Down Tools Over Failure of FG to Appoint Governing Council in Federal Varsities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has threatened a nationwide strike. The union decried the failure of the Federal Government to appoint Governing Councils for Federal Universities.

 

The union also faulted what it described as the nonchalant attitude of the President BOLA TINUBU-led Federal Government to matters pertaining to academics in Nigerian Federal Universities.

 

Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja, the President of the union, Prof. EMMANUEL OSODEKE noted that it has given the TINUBU-led government enough time to set things in motion.

Reps Call For Improved Security Presence in Schools Across the Country

The House of Representatives has called for security presence in schools across the nation to address the worsening security situation in the country.

 

The decision of the House is sequel to the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved at the plenary by BILLY OSAWARU.

 

Presenting the motion, OSAWARU decried that students are no longer safe even in their schools, especially, in places like Borno, Nasarawa, Niger, Zamfara, Katsina and Kaduna States.

 

He recalled that on Thursday, 7th of March 2024, about 287 schoolchildren were kidnapped from a government-owned school in Kaduna State’s Kuriga town.

 

He warned that schools might be shut down if attacks by terrorists and bandits on schools across the country continue.

Federal Government Reiterates Commitment to Community Policing

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to prioritize initiatives aimed at promoting community policing in the country to curb insecurity.

 

Minister of State for Police Affairs, Hajia IMAAN SULAIMAN-IBRAHIM stated this during the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Police Community Relations Committee, PCRC with a theme: “PCRC @40 Community Policing at its Best” held at the Merit House, Maitama, Abuja.

 

SULAIMAN-IBRAHIM added that the government was also committed to enhancing transparency, accountability and foster a culture of respect and understanding as well as strengthening the bond between the Police and the community.

 

The Minister who was represented by the ministry’s Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, BOLAJI KAZEEM described the event as a remarkable milestone and confirmation of the enduring legacy of community policing in the country.

Labor Gives NERC Ultimatum to Reverse Electricity Hike

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and its Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, counterpart, have given the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, till May 12 to withdraw the recent hike in electricity tariff or face unprecedented industrial action.

 

The unions in a letter said the hike in tariff is not just morally reprehensible considering the difficulties Nigerians are faced with currently, but it blatantly disregards fundamental principles and statutory obligations.

 

They noted that hike is a flagrant abuse of power and a clear violation of the trust bestowed upon the commission by the Nigerian people and such actions will not be tolerated or accepted as the new norm.
