Plane Crash in Brazil Kills 61 Persons On Board

An airplane carrying 57 passengers and 4 crew members has crashed in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state, killing everyone on board, the worst airline incident in the Country since 2007.

The aircraft, an ATR 72-500 operated by Voepass airline, was traveling from Cascavel in southern Parana state to Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos international airport when it crashed in the city of Vinhedo.

Voepass initially said the plane was carrying 58 passengers, but a statement on the airline’s website later revised the figure to 57.

Images broadcast on local media showed a large plane spinning as it plummeted almost vertically, while other footage showed a large column of smoke rising from the crash site in what appeared to be a residential area.

There were no survivors,” the city government in Valinhos — which was involved in the rescue and recovery operation in nearby Vinhedo

Vinhedo, with about 76,000 residents, is located approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of Sao Paulo.

“Recovery of the victims’ remains for identification has begun and will continue throughout the night,” Sao Paulo State Governor Tarcisio de Freitas told reporters at the scene.

The statement highlights that by empowering local producers and educating young people in the creation of clean cookstoves, the National Clean Cooking Policy is expected to reduce emissions, improve health, and create millions of jobs by 2024.

From solar-powered streetlights to Waste-to-Energy projects, the Ministry of Environment added that it is driving a low-carbon future, stressing that the upcoming projects like solar plants for federal institutions will ensure that every Nigerian citizen benefits from a greener and prosperous future.

Labour in Akwa Ibom Demands Free and Fair Election from AKISIEC

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, in Akwa lbom state has charged the State Independent Electoral Commission, AKISIEC, to conduct a free, fair and credible local government elections on October 5, 2024, for the will of the people to prevail.

Labour is also advising the electorate to vote for candidates of proven character, who have capacity to represent them at the Local Government levels.

A statement signed by the state NLC chairperson, Comrade SUNNY JAMES, also advised would-be council chairmen to be ready to pay salaries, gratuities pensions and other entitlements of workers centrally as at when due, noting that the era where workers suffered indebtedness was over.

The NLC also directed all affiliate unions at the Local Government levels to prepare for adequate engagement with their respective Council Chairmen when elected, on workers’ demands to achieve effective collective bargaining agreements concerning decent work-places and welfare of members.

Governor Umo Eno Assures of Continuous Partnership with UNIUYO To Further Development

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has assured the management of the University of Uyo that the state government, under his leadership, will continue to support and partner with the institution to further development.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the newly-constituted Governing Council of the University, led by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, Professor Zubairu Tajo Abdallah, he noted that the University, located in Akwa Ibom State, admits many Akwa Ibom indigenes. Therefore, it would not be ignored in the scheme of things.
Governor Eno, who is currently studying for a PhD at the institution, commended the management of the University for their commitment to academic excellence and innovations, particularly the approval for virtual presentations of seminars and other academic engagements.
According to the Governor, the innovation has afforded him the opportunity to present one of his seminars, a requirement for the completion of his PhD program.
Governor Eno commended the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Nyaudoh Ndaeyo, for defending the truth against blackmail and propaganda spread during the last electioneering period.
He welcomed the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, Professor Abdallah, saying it was an honor to host the Governing Council of the University and assured the Pro-Chancellor of a great, peaceful, and memorable tenure at the University.
“Today, I am receiving the leaders of my University with great joy. The University of Uyo has produced so many outstanding personalities in this country, and I believe that one of the crowning moments is that you have produced a Governor.
If there are areas you think we should work together, please let us know. Whatever we can do to give our support, we will do because, at the end of the day, some of the students there are from Akwa Ibom State. So, whatever we do for the University is for our people.
“That’s why, the last time I went to the University for an event, I saw the internal roads and said we should work on them. We will continue to do things to maintain the University as a product of that school. You are the mother, and you know that normally, no child forgets the mother,” he added.
The Governor urged the Pro-Chancellor to use his good office to attract more development to the institution.
In his remarks, the Pro-Chancellor expressed his delight over the landmark developments by Governor Eno in the state, by which he is currently standing tall among his contemporaries in the country.
He affirmed his commitment to furthering the development of the University of Uyo to ensure his Council leaves lasting legacies at the institution and solicited the Governor’s support to help deliver on some projects already identified to be pursued.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nyaudoh Ndaeyo, speaking earlier, thanked Governor Eno for receiving the delegation.
He commended him for the support so far enjoyed by the University and his people-centric policies in the state, which he stated are responsible for the stability and peace in the state amid the ongoing nationwide protest.
