Akwa Ibom House of Assembly Passes Bill to Train and Retrain Health Professionals

the Police Service Commission – PSC’s approval of the appointment of CP MILLER GAJERE DANTAWAYE as the new substantive Commissioner of Police for the Akwa Ibom State Command.

The Head of Press and Public Relations of the Commission, IKECHUKWU ANI, disclosed this in a statement, noting that three other police commissioners have been appointed.

They are ISAH DANLADI NDA for Abia State Command; OLAREWAJU ISHOLA OLAWALE is the new CP for Lagos State Command while CP ANTHONIA ADAKU UCHE ANYA will lead the Ebonyi state Command.

CP WAHEED AYILARA who was posted to Akwa Ibom in January 2024 lost his life last month during a surgical operation in Lagos. So far, CP DANTAWAYE is the 33rd Commissioner of Police in the Akwa Ibom state command.

Chairman of the Commission, DIG HASHIMU ARGUNGU (rtd), said the new state command commissioners must be prepared to make a positive difference in the security management of their states of posting, saying the Commission will monitor their performance.

However, the bill as passed by the House awaits the Governor’s assent.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. UDEME OTONG, directed the Clerk of the House, Mrs. NSIKABASI OROK to communicate the resolution of the House to the Governor for necessary action.

Refusal by traditional birth attendants to refer child birth complications early will henceforth be investigated and would be punishable by law.

‘We can Farm’, tells a story of community members from Akwa Ibom’s oil rich location, Ibeno, one of the coastal areas in Nigeria’s southern state, where environmental ruins have now made Agriculture a daunting and less productive task.

The defiant residents of Iwuo Okpom village in Mkpanak, expect better yields from crops they go all out to plant, but decry how oil and gas exploration in the area has tampered with their environment.

The activities they highlighted also affect the aquatic life, disrupting fish farming, which is the area’s comparative advantage.

Data shows the environmental issues in Ibeno is intense. According to 10year period statistics (2012 – 2022), the Nigerian Gas flare Tracker shows that Ibeno is mostly hit with the highest volume of Gas flared in Akwa Ibom, ( 45.3million Standard cubic feet, out of 47.2million Standard Cubic Feet flared in the state ) follwed by Esit Eket Local Government Area recording 1.9million Standard Cubic Feet of flared gas.

Nigerian Nurses Groan Over The Continuous Closure of Verification Portal

 Hundreds of Nigerian nurses are stranded following the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, NMCN, continuous closure of its portal for verification of nurses’ certificates.

It was gathered that while many nurses are currently stranded in different countries abroad, others are on the verge of being deported.

Nursing boards in the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and the UK are said to have stopped accepting nursing certificates from Nigerian nurses because they cannot verify their authenticity.

Reports revealed that the National Assembly had twice urged the NMCN to open its site and commence verification of Nurses and Midwives based on its former guidelines pending the conclusion of an investigation by the House Committee on Health Institutions but the council is yet to heed the resolution of the House.

However, when Inspiration FM News reached out to the Caretaker Committee Chairman of National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) in Akwa Ibom State, Comrade UDUAK NDEM, it was stated that the relevant authorities are deliberating on the matter.

Akwa Ibom Ministry of Health Confirms Additional Case of Mpox in the State

The Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health has confirmed an additional case of MPOX, thereby pushing the number of cases found in the state from January 2024 till date to four.

 The state Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer, Mr. SAMUEL ETUK, who confirmed the additional case while speaking on MPOX at the Breakthrough Action Nigeria media review meeting in Uyo, stressed that of the four cases, two were recorded in Uyo, one in Onna, and another in Nsit Ubium.

According to him, the cases were recorded in children aged two, four, and 12, as well as an adult aged 41 years.

Mr. ETUK, who noted that 3 cases found in January were successfully treated, maintained that there is no specific treatment for the infection but that the disease was managed based on the symptoms.

He also revealed that the disease is self-limiting, meaning that those with a strong immune system might not have any sign of the disease, while others who get infected and manifest symptoms do get better with treatment.

Akwa Ibom falls in the category of states placed on high alert because it recorded cases of Mpox in the period reported by the NCDC; January 2024 to June 2024, where it was noted that so far there has been zero death.

The State Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer also noted that surveillance has been heightened over the outbreak of the disease and that the Ministry of Health is using community informants, 10 per ward, to report suspected cases.
