Nigerians Decry Brain Drain in The Health Sector

• Call for Government’s immediate intervention.

Statistics reflect that the Doctor to Patient ratio is widening rather than decreasing.
According to Data released by the Nigeria Medical Association NMA, the 1:600 doctor to patients ratio is no longer applicable as we now operate on a ratio of 1:5000 doctor to patients. What a frightening rise.
It has become a dire situation as Doctors leave Nigeria in droves to practice in other countries.
NMA in April 2022 raised alarm over the mass exodus of Doctors, who the body noted are accessing Jobs in Europe, America, and Asia. This leaves a deficit in Nigeria’s health sector with about 30,000 doctors to cater to patients and sustain the overburdened Health care system.
Inspiration FM gathered that Citizens are lamenting what they termed an omen as they also advised the Nigerian Government to quit acting unperturbed by the situation.
Our Correspondent GLORY SILAS in this report examines the situation, taking us through the challenges and critical aspects that need urgent interventions for change in the narrative.

Last week, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control; NCDC had reported Akwa Ibom leading with 293 new infections for a period of 6days,  ahead of Lagos which had recorded 101 cases.

DR IME UDO stated these in an exclusive interview with our senior Health Correspondent, IMA DEM.

Beyond accessing the jabs at Public and Private health facilities, the state immunisation officer specified that there is a mobile option which involves the vaccines being taken to the people in their communities.

Government in Talks with Resident Doctors to Prevent Indefinite Strike

The Publicity Secretary of NARD, Dr. Yusuf Alfa says Government has commenced talks with the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) over the demands of the doctors.

Recall that the resident doctors had on July 30th, 2022, issued a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to implement all the agreements it had with the association or risk an indefinite strike.

The doctors’ demands are that the Federal Government expedite action on the payment of the newly reviewed Medical Residency Training Fund to enable its members to meet up with the closing date of examination registration as advertised by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.

They are also demanding the immediate implementation and payment of the new hazard allowance and arrears as contained in the circular from the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission.

NARD is seeking the payment of the skipping arrears for 2014, 2015, and 2016 to deserving members; the immediate payment of consequential adjustment of the minimum wage to members who have been deprived since it was implemented several years ago.

Other demands include an immediate review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure and other related allowances given the current economic situation in the country; payment of salary arrears for doctors in Abia (26 months), Imo (10 months), Ondo (five months), Ekiti (three months), and Gombe (two months) states; among others.
