Akwa Ibom House of Assembly Passes Anti Stigmatization of HIV/AIDS Patients Bill Into Law.

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly (AKHA) today passed into Law a Bill to prohibit stigmatization against persons living with HIV/AIDS and to Regulate the Practice of HIV /AIDS Counseling and Testing in the state.
This followed a report of the Chairman, House Committee on Health, Hon (Elder) Udeme Otong, member representing Abak State Constituency during Plenary today Thursday, 30/9/2021.

The Report entitled ” A Bill for a law to Prohibit Stigmatization and Discrimination Against People Living with HIV/AIDS and to Regulate the Practice of HIV/AIDS Counseling and Testing and for other Matters Connected therewith” seeks to protect the rights and dignity of persons living with HIV /AIDS.

According to the Committee Chairman, the new law will eliminate all forms of stigmatization and discrimination against persons living with HIV/ AIDS and create a supportive environment for the people with HIV/ AIDS to work under normal conditions for as long as they are medically fit.

The Law will protect the medical status or information of people living with HIV /AIDS and also guarantee equal opportunities in employment, public accommodation and transportation.
Also, it will remove all forms of barriers to HIV /AIDS prevention, testing, treatment and support services to persons living with HIV AIDS/ as well as improve their emotional and psychological well being including their mental health.
After considering the report at the Committee of the Whole, the Bill was read the third time and passed into Law with September 30, 2021 as the commencement date.

In his remarks, the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, directed the Clerk, Mrs Mandu Umoren to communicate the decision of the House to the Governor.

Stakeholders In National HIV Response Charge Media Professionals On Result Oriented Messages.

Media professionals have been urged to effectively use Social and Behavioral Change Communication (SBCC) to aid Nigeria’s HIV response.

The role of media professionals were highlighted at a capacity building workshop organized by the National Agency for Control of AIDS, NACA in collaboration with Johns Hopkins Program for International Education in Gynecology and Obstetrics.

Participants at the workshop were tasked to channel their skills in Social and Behavioral Change Communication towards telling compelling HIV stories for better outcomes.

Director General of NACA, Dr GAMBO ALIYU, represented by the agency’s South-West Zonal Coordinator, RAHEEM MOHAMMED said the media is a critical stakeholder in the agency’s efforts aimed at ending the epidemic by 2030.

In a chat with Inspiration FM’s Health Correspondent, IMA DEM, Journalism Trainer, ANSELM OKOLO said journalists must focus on framing HIV messages appropriately to speak to the hearts of the people.

As part of the activities to mark World Pharmacist Day 2021; the Association Of Lady Pharmacists (ALPs) in Akwa Ibom State has laid the foundation for the building of a drug information center in Uyo.

Speaking during the event, the Chairperson of the group, Pharmacist Ime Obot stated that the drug information center will serve as a hub for research on drugs, counselling and advancement of pharmaceutical practice in the country.

Other activities to commemorate the 2021 World Pharmacist Day included Town Hall Meeting; clean up of the state secretariat plaza in Uyo and Eket Local Government secretariat as well as visitation to orphanage homes.

Also speaking during the week long event, the chairman pharmaceutical society of Nigeria (PSN), Akwa Ibom State Chapter , Dr Akwaowo Akpabio urged the State Government to reconstitute the task force on fake and expired drugs noting that the state has lacked one for the past 8 years. He noted that the dangers of fake and expired drugs cannot be overemphasized hence the need for monitoring.

The commemoration of World Pharmacists day 2021 ended in Uyo with a dinner and award night. The various events were witnessed by the Registrar of the Pharmacist Council of Nigeria; National President ,Association of Lady Pharmacists; President Medical Women Association, Vice Chairman of the NMA AKS, Dr Sylvanus Ukafia, the Commandant of NDLEA and a host of others.

The theme for this year’s World Pharmacy Day is – “Pharmacy: Always trusted for your health.”
