CBN Stops Banks from Over-The-Counter Withdrawal of New Notes, Orders Banks to Load ATMs.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has directed banks to load their Automated Teller Machines with only new notes to ensure that the currency circulates across the nation ahead of the January 31, 2023, deadline when the old notes will no longer be legal tender.

CBN also ordered Deposit Money Banks not to pay customers making over-the-counter withdrawals of new naira notes again.

This was contained in a memo issued to all the branch managers to enforce the CBN order, which takes effect immediately.

The memo, which was titled., ‘Urgent update on currency redesign’ and signed by the Group Head, Retail Operation, stated, “The CBN has mandated that we immediately stop the Over-the-Counter payment of the new N200, N500 and N,1000 currency. Instead, all new notes should be loaded into the ATMs for customer withdrawals.

“This is effective immediately please,”

It was learnt that as of Friday, the banks had not been able to comply with the directive as they complained of inadequate supply of the new notes, prompting them to load their ATMs with the old notes.

Bankers have complained that the new notes were in short supply, hence hence the decision to load a mixture of the old and new N1,000 and N500 notes in the ATMs for customers to withdraw.

However, sources in the CBN, confirmed that the apex bank indeed issued the directive to the banks.

He explained, “From this weekend, new notes will be available for disbursement to bank customers. We are pushing the N1,000 and N500 notes through the ATMs for now. The N200 will be available later.

“The aim is to check inflation and currency abuse. A research was conducted and it showed that the demand for the N1,000 and N500 is higher, hence the decision to start with them.”

Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria ARCON Sues Meta

The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria(ARCON) has filed a case against Meta Platforms Incorporated, owners of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp platforms and its agent AT3 Resources Limited at the Federal High Court, Abuja Judicial Division.

According to a statement on Tuesday by the apex regulatory body for Nigeria’s advertising ecosystem, ARCON is seeking a declaration among others that the continued publication and exposure of various advertisements directed at the Nigerian market through Facebook and Instagram platforms by Meta Platforms Incorporated without ensuring the same is vetted and approved before exposure is illegal, unlawful and a violation of the extant advertising Law in Nigeria.

ARCON stated that Meta Platforms Incorporated’s continued exposure of unvetted adverts had also led to loss of revenue to the Federal Government.

ARCON is seeking N30bn in sanction for the violation of the advertising laws and for loss of revenue as a result of Meta Incorporated’s continued exposure of unapproved adverts on it’s platforms.

According to ARCON, the Council is not regulating the online media space. Rather, it’s focus is on advertising and marketing communications on the online platforms in line with its establishment Act.

Nigeria Customs Announce Increased Activity and Revenue at Onne Port

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Area II Command, Onne Port, Rivers State, yesterday, said it facilitated 876,775.60 metric tonnes of export cargoes with a free on board (FOB) value of N203.96 billion between January and June this year.

The Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Auwal Mohammed, who made the disclosure while reviewing the command’s operations in the first six months of 2022, added that Nigeria Export Supervision Scheme (NESS) worth N1. 075 billion was processed during the period.

In a statement, by its Public Relations Officer (PRO), Ifeoma Onuigbo Ojekwu, the CAC said in the corresponding period of last year, the command processed 331,356.40 metric tonnes with FOB charge of $141 million.

He explained that the free on board value in naira was N58.2 billion with a NESS rate of N260 million.

The comptroller said the 2022 export statistics showed an improvement of 150 per cent increase over the first half of 2021.

The Area Controller noted that the command also collected N115.26 billion in revenue during the period under review, a sharp increase over the N78 billion generated in the first six months of last year and the N46.6 billion received same period of 2020.

According to him, further comparison indicated a 147 per cent increase above the 2020 collection and 47 per cent rise over the 2021 figures. The posting shows differences of N37 billion and N68.5 billion for 2021 and 2020.

Mohammed said the command also made 28 seizures, comprising nine containers worth N531million, adding that machetes brought into the country without end-user certificates, military wears, vegetable oil, whisky, soap and used clothing were among the confiscated items.

Other confiscations include used tyres, foreign parboiled rice, tomato paste, used vehicle parts and other items either classified as prohibited or which duty payments were evaded.

The CAC hinted that the Domestic Export Warehouse (DEW) approved by the Federal Government at Onne, provided further opportunities for exporters to process and package their exports.

Mohammed described the facility as a one-stop-shop geared at promoting and encouraging export trade.

He said due diligence by regulatory and government agencies, including examination of goods, is to be conducted at the warehouse.
