Rivers Cross As Plateau Falls in Libya in CAF Confederations Cup
The Pride of Rivers, Rivers United will be Nigeria’s sole representative on the continent of Africa this season, after securing a 1-all draw against Libyan opponents Al-Nasr in the CAF Confederations cup playoffs. The reverse was the case however as Plateau United, could not hold on to their 1st Leg win over Al-Khader, conceding 3 unreplied goals to submit their 4-1 advantage, thereby dropping out of the continent.
Plateau United gaffer, Fidelis Ilechukwu had bemoaned the goal conceeded in Abuja in the home leg, complaining about the quality of play of the Peace boys ahead of the return leg in Libya. Although fraught with all the shenanigans that North African sides are known for, Plateau United seemed to have held on after a goalless first half.
Al Khader broke the deadlock in the 58 minute and continued to pile on the pressure for more goals, before adding a 2nd late into the fixture, the 3rd and decisive goal that meant Plateau dropped out was scored in the final minute of regulation time, which mean’t Al Khader of Libya progressed on away goal rule.
Stanley Eguma and his lads on the other hand already had their job cut out for them having secured a 5-nil victory in Port Harcourt, they knew what needed to be done and kept the focus despite all the drama that heralded their arrival in Benghazi. They conceded in the first half but came back strong in the second half to secure a draw, as Nyima Nwagua restored parity for the port harcourt side. 1-1 it ended and a spot in the group stages guaranteed for the Nigerian side.
Nigeria’s coefficient continues to drop on the continent of Africa however, as NPFL clubsides continually fail to make the mark in CAF competitions.
Wike’s Camp Hold Meeting in London as Atiku Seeks Resolution to PDP Crisis
The five Peoples Democratic Party governors led by Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike will today; Thursday, meet in London, United Kingdom.
Governor Nyesom Wike, Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) and Samuel Ortom (Benue) recently withdrew their membership of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council, insisting on the removal of the National Chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu.
Govenor Wike says He is not happy with the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar after the latter settled for the Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate despite reportedly having an agreement to run with the Rivers State’s governor on a joint ticket after Wike lost to him in the primary election.
The Governors who were conspicuously absent from the Atiku campaign flag off in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital, are meeting in London today to take far reaching decisions ahead of the 2023 polls.
It was learnt that Monday’s decision by the party and Atiku to flag off the campaign without Wike and his allies may have informed the latest meeting.
So far, efforts to reconcile Atiku and Wike’s allies have not been successful. The Board of Trustees of the party led by the acting Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, set up a reconciliation committee to intervene in the lingering crisis but have been unable to broker peace as expected.
Wike has vowed to remain in the party, promising however not to have anything to do with the presidential campaigns unless Ayu leaves.
