World HIV/AIDS 2022: Preventing New Cases, Securing the Rights of People Living with HIV

For this year’s WORLD AIDS DAY, the United Nations insists there is need to talk about the issues of inequality with the Theme; EQUALIZE TO END AIDS.

 

In Nigeria, a more direct focus is on EQUAL ACCESS TO HIV TREATMENT AND PREVENTION SERVICES, as Akwa Ibom State embraces a sub theme which is mainly hinged on ENDING STIGMA AND DISCRIMINATION against persons living with the Virus.

 

This focus is crucial for Akwa Ibom considering that the Anti-Stigma Bill is awaiting assent by Governor UDOM EMMANUEL, 14months after it was passed by the state House of Assembly.

 

In a chat with Newsmen, Acting South South Zonal Director of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, Mr THOMAS NNAMNSO-OWO affirmed that HIV affects everyone in the society.

Approximately 38.4million persons are living with HIV globally, 1.5million new infections took place in 2021, 650, 000 persons died from AIDS related illnesses, and the world is in danger of increased statistics of new infections following issues of inequality and lean resources.

Speaking about the importance of prioritizing equality, UNAIDS representative In Akwa Ibom State, Dr IDAYAT UTHMAN said equalizing is central to hitting the 2030 END HIV target.

A total of four hundred and sixty-three athletes and officials of Team Akwa Ibom departed Uyo, the state capital, Tuesday, for Asaba, Delta state, venue of this year’s twenty-first National Sports Festival, tagged “Delta 2022”.
Addressing the contingent, who were in high spirits, at a brief departure ceremony which was held at Nest of Champions, Uyo, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Sir Monday Uko announced that the Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, has approved the payment of all allowances and entitlement of members of the contingent and admonished them to remain focused, disciplined and committed throughout their stay in Asaba.
Mr. Uko, who was represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports and a veteran of the country’s sports industry, Elder Paul Bassey, noted that the only way to reciprocate the Governor’s kind gesture and accentuate the state’s leadership position in Nigeria’s sports industry was for members of Team Akwa Ibom to win as many gold medals as possible so as to come out tops at the end of the Festival.
Speaking earlier, the Director of Sports, Elder Ifiok Duff, expressed satisfaction with the support that the delegation has received from Government and charged the athletes to give their utmost in defence of the state’s reputation at the biennial championship.
Responding on behalf of the contingent, track and field sensation, master Edidiong Udo, thanked Governor Udom Emmanuel for approving their participation in the competition in spite of the economic difficulties that the country is currently experiencing and promised to do their best to make the state proud.
Team Akwa Ibom will be competing in thirty sports when proceedings get underway in Asaba from November 28 to December 10, this year.

Policy Alert, A Nigerian non-profit Organisation working for improved development outcomes in the areas of economic governance, environmental justice and agrarian livelihoods, has released figures of expenditure in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly between January and September 2022.

The figures released via its official twitter handle revealed these startling figures that highlighted the spendings and asked pertinent questions concerning the judicious use of state funds.

This comes on the heels of questions asked of the Akwa Ibom state Governement over the 13% derivations funds that had been paid to the state in recent times.

AKWA IBOM’s MINISTRY OF HEALTH TO BEGIN INSECTICIDE TREATED NET DISTRIBUTION IN DECEMBER.
In Furtherance to the aim of achieving a malaria free society, the Akwa Ibom state government is set to kick start the 2022 mass Insecticide Treated Net (ITNs) campaigns on Decemeber 16, 2022.
Statistics presented by the NDHS show that the prevalence of the deadly malaria disease in children in the state declined to 23.2 percent, following a quadrennial consistency in the Mass net distribution campaigns and strict adherence to its use.
Akwa Ibom state government through the state Ministry of Health and in collaboration with Implementing partners will distribute over 3.7million Insecticide Treated Nets to households this Year.
The Ministry of Health has also trained health workers while putting all the necessary indices in place to properly monitor households billed to benefit from the Net distribution campaign.
