Akwa Ibom Has no Official Map – State House of Assembly

Stakeholders turned up yesterday at the Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly for the public hearing for a bill for a law to provide for a map for the state and other matters connected therewith.

The public hearing was jointly organized by the house committees on lands and housing, boundary and conflict resolution, local government and chieftaincy affairs.

In his opening remark, chairman of the joint committee and leader of the house, UDO KIERAN AKPAN, said the bill, when passed and assented to, will put to rest every boundary dispute in the state.

His stance was also corroborated by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, FRANK ARCHIBONG and Elder ANIEKAN AKPAN, who represented the Commissioner for Lands and Water Resources.

UDO KIERAN also clarified that the bill does not in any way mete out injustice or injury to anyone or group.

Making their presentations, representatives from Eket People’s Union, Onna, Ikot Abasi and MkpatEnin local government areas supported the bill, saying it will provide permanent solution to the boundary crises some of their communities have grappled with over the years.

On his part, Chairman, State Traditional Rulers Council, Ntenyin Dr SOLOMON ETUK, said the map, when done, will bring lasting peace and harmony to the state.

 

In the same vein, the Centre for Human Rights and Accountability Network, CHRAN, through its Executive Director, Otuekong FRANKIN ISONG, urged the state government to adequately fund the Office of the Surveyor General of the state to carry out the task, when the bill is given assent by the governor.

Corp Members Lament Delay in Payment of Allowances by INEC

Members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC who served as ad-hoc staff in the just concluded general elections in Akwa Ibom State have decried the non-payment of their allowances by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Recall that thousands of corps members were recruited across the country by the electoral body to serve as ad-hoc staff in the elections to complement the staff strength of the commission.

Our correspondent UHUOTU OMILABU reports that the corps members expressed disappointment that they were yet to get their payment from the commission despite the efforts they put in to get the work done.

The corps members further talked about their experiences serving in their various polling units across different Local Government Areas of the state.

According to a document obtained by Inspiration Fm, the corp members are entitled to payment under subheads; Training, transportation, feeding and honorarium.

Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Amends State Investment Corporation Law

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has ratified a Bill for a Law to amend the ‘Akwa Ibom Investment Corporation (AKICORP) Law 2012’ and also passed into law the ‘Akwa Ibom State Bonds, Notes and other Securities Bill 2022.’
This follows the reports placed before the House at Tuesday plenary by Hon. KufreAbasi Edidem (Itu) and Hon. Uduak Odudoh (Ikot Abasi/Eastern Obolo), Chairmen of the House Committees on Industry, Commerce and Tourism, and Appropriation and Finance.
According to Hon. Edidem’s report, the amendment of the 2012 AKICORP Law will update the scope of the legal and institutional framework of the Corporation in line with global best practices.
“The amendment will strengthen the corporate governance structure of AKICORP to meet with the present and future corporate demands. It will entrench the governance structure of Ibom Airlines Limited to safeguard the investment against undue political interference and instill confidence in investors to invest in the state”, the report added.
The House also ratified the report of the House Committee on Appropriation and Finance on Akwa Ibom State Bonds, Notes and other Securities Bill 2022.
After due deliberation and consideration of the Bills at the Committee of the Whole, the House subsequently passed same into Law with April 4, 2023 as their commencement date.
Also at Plenary, a Bill a Law to Provide for a Map for Akwa Ibom State and for other Matters connected therewith, sponsored by Rt. Hon. David Lawrence (Eket), was read the first time and committed to a Joint Committee on Lands, Housing, Houndary and Local Government for scrutiny, to be headed by the Leader of the House, Sir Udo Kierian Akpan (Oruk Anam).
A Bill for a Law to Establish Akwa Ibom State Rural Access Roads Agency (Establishment) and Funds Bill, 2022, was read the second time and committed to the Committee on Rural Development for further legislative actions.
Members present at plenary included Princess Felicia Bassey (Okobo), Otuekong Emmanuel Bassey (Ini), Barr. Aniefiok Dennis Akpan (Etinan), Otuekong Nse Essien (ONNA), Elder Aniekan Uko (Ibesikpo Asutan), Hon. Effiong Bassey (Oron/Udung Uko), Elder Mark Esset (Nsit Atai), Hon. Asuquo Archibong (Urue Offong/Oruko), Elder Udeme Otong (Abak), Elder Mfon Idung (Ika/Etim Ekpo), Chief Effiong Johnson (Mbo), Barr. Victor Ekwere (Mkpat Enin) and Dr Charity Ido (Ukanafun).
Meanwhile, the House has adjourned its plenary to Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at 10am.

Akwa Ibom State Governor-Elect, Umo Eno Invites Contestants from Other Parties to Join Hands in Project Akwa Ibom

The Governor-Elect of Akwa Ibom state, Pastor Umo Eno has invited Candidates who ran for the office of the Governor on the platform of other parties to join hands with him in the journey of deepening the continued peace and progress of Akwa Ibom State.

Umo Eno made this know while speaking after he was presented with the Certificate of Return today(Thursday, March 20, 2023), at the INEC state Headquarters , in Uyo.

The Speech read;

1.Let me thank most sincerely, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Cyril Omorogbe and his great team, Mrs. May Agbamuche- Mbu, the Honourable National Commissioner, of the Commission , South South zone, for their kind invitation for me to receive this Certificate of Return, which symbolizes the last of the levels of recognition of my overwhelming victory at the March 18th, 2023 Gubernatorial elections.
2.Let me again dedicate this victory and the Certificate of Return, to God Almighty and the good people of Akwa Ibom State, for deciding to A.R.I.S.E. with our vision, and electing in the process to embrace peace, development, unity, Christ-centric leadership and a governance philosophy that puts accent on humility and the embrace of our common humanity.
3. Let me again thank most profusely my Political Father, His Excellency, Governor Udom Emmanuel for seeing, as I always say, what others may not have seen in me; his dear wife, and First Lady, Her Excellency, Dr. (Mrs.) Martha Udom Emmanuel, who was our Campaigner-in Chief, my dear wife and Incoming First Lady, Pastor (Mrs.) Patience Umo Eno, our Deputy Governor- Elect, Distinguished Senator Akon Eyakenyi , my wonderful children and their spouses, my siblings and grand-children for their prayer support, faith and trust in my capacity to lead this State. I am deeply and profoundly grateful.
4. I remain eternally grateful to our great Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for their choice in me, as the Gubernatorial Standard-bearer, our able and indefatigable Chairman, Elder Aniekan Akpan and the State Working Committee of the Party, the numerous Support Groups, who went out to preach the gospel of continuity based on our A.R.I.S.E. Agenda, our Fathers in Faith and the entire Evangelical Community in the State, our numerous stakeholders and Elder statesmen such as former Governor , Obong ( Arc) Victor Attah, the Iroko of AKwa Ibom politics, Chief Michael Afangideh, Distinguished Senator Effiong Bob, among others, our Campaign Director-General, H.E., Ambassador Assam Assam, SAN and the Campaign Council, various Directorates, the Youth, Women, Elders etc. You believed, your toiled, you sacrificed and the moment for the pursuit of happiness is here.
4. Let me again use this opportunity to invite my brothers who, also, aspired and contested for the same position that it has pleased God to entrust me with today, to join me in this great journey of deepening the continued peace and progress of our dear State. As I said in my Acceptance Speech, we all ran a good race, but in any contest, a winner must emerge and it has pleased God to make me the winner. I am committed to remaining magnanimous in victory and be a Governor for all Akwaibomites irrespective of their political affiliations.
5. Permit me to thank the other contestants who ran with me, and who have since visited to congratulate me and promised to work with me in furtherance of our developmental agenda as enshrined in our A.R.I.S.E. Agenda.
6. Let me thank most especially the Chairman of Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC,) Akwa Ibom State, Hon. Ubong Emmanuel who was also a gubernatorial candidate for ADP and the entire leadership of the organization for their ringing endorsement of our victory and again reaffirming that the March 18th, 2023 election was free, fair, credible and represented the expressed will of our dear people.
7. Let me again reemphasize the need for us to eschew hatred based on our political differences. There is too much polarization along political lines in this State. We must not allow politics to poison the well of our unity. We must continue to celebrate and deepen our bonds and cords of brotherhood, our deeply rooted homogenous beliefs, shared values and ethos and shy away from hatred, anger, animosity and animus towards one another based purely on political differences.
8.Political campaigns are over; it’s time to heal the land and further move the needle of development of our State collectively, in one accord and with unbroken spirit of kindreship. That is the spirit I will bring to the administration of this State, so help me God.
