PLHIVs in Akwa Ibom Decry Stigma and Discrimination

…Resound Call for Anti Stigma Law.

The Network of Persons Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (NEPWAN) Akwa Ibom State chapter, has decried stigmatization and discrimination against their members by citizens and the state government.

Recall that the bill seeking to prohibit stigmatization and discrimination against persons living with HIV/AIDS was passed by Akwa Ibom State House Assembly on 30th September, 2021, but awaiting assent by Governor UDOM EMMANUEL.

After several failed efforts, a delegation of the association in partnership with other stakeholders staged a peaceful march to the governor’s office, Wellington Bassey Way, Uyo on Thursday but were told the governor was not on seat.

Members of the association seized the chance to join other Akwa Ibom women in Ibom Hall to express goodwill to Her Excellency, wife of the governor, Dr Martha Emmanuel.

They later alleged they were resisted at Ibom Hall by the commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr INI ADIAKPAN who according to them claimed they would disrupt the event.

The HIV Anti Stigma and Discrimination bill seeks to regulate HIV/AIDS counselling and testing in the state, prohibit stigmatization against persons living with HIV/AIDS, protect the rights and dignity of persons living with HIV /AIDS and hasten the achievement of no-new-infection by 2030.

Heightened Calls Made for Preservation of Nigeria’s Cultural Heritage

The Management of the National Museum Uyo has advocated inclusion of History studies in primary and secondary Schools’ curriculum, as well as collaboration to develop the museum.

Recall that Nigerian History Study was removed from the Nigerian schools’ curriculum in 2009, blaming the removal on students’ apathy towards the subject, little or no job opportunity for History graduates and scarcity of Teachers for the subject.

Following agitations from Nigerians, the policy was jettisoned and government redirected that history should be taught as a standalone subject, a policy which was implemented in November, 2022.

In an exclusive Interview with Inspiration FM, the Uyo National Museum’s Curator, OKOKON BONGO-BASSEY said the removal of history from school’s curriculum had distorted the understanding of the Nigerian history.

Mr BONGO-BASSEY who was speaking when he appeared live on the station News and Currents Affairs programme TALK RADIO on Saturday May 20 2023 added that Akwa Ibom has rich cultural heritage but complained about inadequate attention given to museums in the state.

He spoke alongside the Assistant Chief Conservator of the Meseum, Mr Nsikak Nya.

The conversation was given precedence during the week as the World marked the 2023 International Meseum Day focusing on the theme; “Meseums, Sustainability and Well-being”.
