NLC/TUC Suspend Strike Action

The Organised Labour Unions in Nigeria; Nigeria Labor Congress(NLC)  and Trade Union Congress (TUC), has suspended its proposed strike action. This is barely 24 hours after Nationwide protests held.

The President of Trade Union Congress, Festus Osifo made this known during an interview with Newsmen on this morning.

He said the Labour leaders who had earlier met with President Bola Tinubu extracted some commitments to some of the issues raised during the meeting for immediate implementation.

He explained the suspension of the strike was based on the outcome of the meeting.

However, the Nigeria Labour Congress had earlier announced that it would proceed with the nationwide mass protest as initially planned, following a meeting with the Federal Government.

The NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero noted that the outcome of the meeting with the government did not yield positive any changes or concessions that would alter their course of action. They stressed that they remained steadfast in their commitment to representing the Nigerian workers’ and people’s interests and desires.

President Bola Tinubu to Address the Nation Today at 7:00 PM As Labor Gears for Strike

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is set to address the Nation on Monday (today) at 7 pm.

The President’s Special Adviser on Strategy, Communication and Special Duties, Dele Alake, announced this in a statement released on Monday morning.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will make a broadcast to the nation on Monday, July 31, 2023, at 7 pm.

“Television, radio stations and other electronic media outlets are enjoined to hook up to the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority and Radio Nigeria for the broadcast,” the statement read.

The broadcast may not be unconnected to the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit, known better as petrol, and its accompanying effect on the cost of living of Nigerians.

This is as the Nigeria Labour Congress commenced mass mobilisation ahead of its planned nationwide strike scheduled to begin Wednesday, August 2 to protest the hardship occasioned by the fuel subsidy removal.

In a schedule released in Abuja on Sunday, the NLC urged Nigerians to “join us at the Unity Fountain, Abuja on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at 7 am.”

“There is nowhere in the world where government leaves its citizens totally to the vagaries of the market without some measure of control and protection. The Federal Government should immediately deal decisively with the criminal content of subsidy instead of exposing ordinary citizens to avoidable pain and hardship.

“As a matter of national importance, it is imperative to fix all our refineries to be able to cater to domestic fuel consumption,” the NLC said.
