Akwa Ibom, Ondo, Abia States Declare War on Cholera

Following the outbreak of cholera in some states, the Ondo State Government has explained measures it has taken to curb the spread of the disease in the state.

 

The state Commissioner for Health, BANJI AJAKA, said on Monday that the state has activated its surveillance for immediate response to any case of cholera in the state.

 

The commissioner added that an incident management system would be set up through the EOC, facilitating case detection, isolation and treatment of cases, including complications.

 

AJAKA appealed to citizens to maintain a high level of personal and food hygiene and report promptly to the hospital in case of diarrhoea and vomiting.

Also, the Abia State Government has said that there is no cholera in the state and also affirmed that all 109 suspected cases reported in six LGAs of the state between January and June 2024 were all confirmed negative.

 

The position was made known by the Abia State Ministry of Health in an updated report covering January to June 2024 in response to the recent alert by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, about increasing cholera cases nationwide.

According to the state epidemiologist, ELEZUO ELEZUO, and Director of Public Health and Disease Control in the ministry, Dr ORIE AGOMUO, 109 suspected cases of cholera were reported in six LGAs but only two samples tested positive after rapid diagnosis testing, RDT.

 

It however noted that prevention and rapid response measures have been put in place by the ministry to ensure that Abia remains cholera-free.

 

Meanwhile, Akwa Ibom state commissioner for health, Prof AUGUSTINE UMOH will speak to the preparedness of the state against cholera and answer questions bordering on the roles of citizens towards its prevention.

the Akwa Ibom State Traders Association under the leadership of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Market Matters, Akparawa IDORENYIN RAPHAEL has moved to put an end to forceful market unions in the State.

 

The development is in order to alleviate the sufferings of Akwa Ibom market people. Over the weekend, the Akwa Ibom State Market Monitoring Team took a tour toUrua Akpan Andem in Uyo,UruaMbakara and other markets in Ikot Ekpene.

 

Speaking at Urua Akpan Andem, Akparawa IDORENYIN RAPHAEL maintained that no trader should be forced to belong to any market union, affirming that such an act is punishable by law. He also noted that issue of ticketing in the market will be tackled.

 

Speaking also at UruaMbakara, the Governor’s Aide said that he was happy to discover the absence of union or ticketing in Ikot Ekpene market, reiterating that no one should be forced to join any market union.

 

He further revealed that the Governor’s plan to build an international market in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area still stands, and that it is a proof that he has good intentions for both the traders and people.

 

Mr RAPHAEL added that the Governor had released 1.5 billion naira interest-free loan to traders with 500 million naira to be allocated to each Senatorial district.He urged traders to register their names at Ibom FADAMA Micro Finance Bank through their respective unions so as to get their share of the money.

Governor Umo Eno Receives Reports of Traditional Council Law Amendment

In another Development, Governor UMO ENO has received the report of the committee set up to resolve the deadlock and find lasting solutions to the issues arising from the amended Akwa Ibom State Traditional Rulers’ Law 2023. 

 

The report was presented to the Governor at the Government House in Uyo, barely two months after he constituted a 7-man committee headed by the Paramount Ruler of Eket, EDIDEM E. C. D. ABIA. 

 

Speaking shortly after receiving the report, Governor UMO ENO assured all of his commitment to study the recommendations made by the committee and thereafter, come up with a draft bill reflecting the true wishes of all parties concerned, which will be forwarded to the State House of Assembly for necessary legislation. 

 

He thanked members of the committee for accepting to serve in the interest of peace, expressing the belief that the report has addressed all the grey areas including issues of rotation of the highest traditional stool, the tenure of the traditional headship as well as the Chairman and President-General of the Traditional Rulers Council.

 

The Presentation of the report was witnessed by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Elder UDEME OTONG, Secretary to the State Government, Prince ENOBONG UWAH, the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, UKO UDOM S.A.N  and a one -time Attorney General in the state, Barr. EKPENYONG NTEKIM, who was counsel to a section of the traditional rulers.

In the meantime, Governor UMO ENO has congratulated President BOLA TINUBU, the leadership of the National Assembly, the Judiciary, Armed Forces and other Nigerians on the occasion of this year’s Democracy Day.

 

In a goodwill message released by his Chief Press Secretary, EKERETE UDOH, Governor UMO ENO said there is no doubt that the country’s democracy has been consolidated, and that the traditions, norms and culture have also been deeply internalized by Nigerians.

 

Governor UMO ENO who called on citizens to pray for the leaders and support them in their determined efforts to bring growth and development to the people, added that even though the country still have many miles to travel, the miles covered so far has given hope for the journey ahead.

 

He stressed that the Akwa Ibom State Government will continue to work tirelessly across party lines to bring democratic dividends to the people, in line with the ARISE Agenda.
