The havoc caused by cows entering their farmlands has angered and worried the residents of Ikot Essien village in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area.
The destruction of crops like cassava and maize by these cows has made it harder for the people to obtain food on a regular basis.
Speaking with INSPIRATION FM News, The Residents maintained that the cows had harmed their roads, making the situation worse, particularly during the rainy season.
The residents also stated that they have faced attacks from the Herdsmen when attempting to ask them to leave their farmlands.
They are however pleading with the government to step in and assist in shielding their roads and crops from more harm that the cows may bring.
Concerns have been expressed about the repeated attacks on farmers and their crops, particularly in light of the state’s non-implementation of the Anti-Open Grazing law.
The law prohibits open rearing of livestock and prevents the destruction of farms, crops, ponds, settlements, and properties caused by grazing of livestock.
You would recall that in October 2021, the immediate Past Governor of the State,Mr. UDOM EMMANUEL had established a committee consisting of 14 members to oversee the implementation of the law. However, it appears that little has been done to remedy the problem till date, leaving Akwa Ibom farmers to constantly count the losses incurred from cattle incursions into their farms.
