PDP Conducts Local Government Primaries in Akwa Ibom

In Itu Local Government Area, where delegates cast their votes to affirm the emergence of Mr UBONG WILSON UKUT, the Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly, Rt Hon KUFREABASI EDIDEM remarked that the party faithful in Itu followed the steps of Governor ENO in conducting themselves orderly to produce a widely accepted candidate for PDP in the October poll.

At Utu Etim Ekpo, the Etim Ekpo Local Government Council Headquarters, where GIDEON UWA emerged as the Chairmanship Candidate, Former National Legal Adviser of the PDP, Barr. EMMANUEL ENOIDEM, SAN, lauded the PDP faithful for their orderliness throughout the exercise, even as he described the Nomination as the most peaceful in the history of Primary elections in Nigeria.

In Ikot Abasi, frontline Construction Czar, Engr UWEM OKOKO, who spoke to reporters shortly after IME WILLIAMSON ESSIEN emerged after the affirmative Nomination, said everything that has happened in Akwa Ibom since the return of Democracy in 1999 shows that PDP holds the magic wand for the multifaceted development of Akwa Ibom State.

The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information, Comrade INI EMEMOBONG, speaking in Oko-Ita, Ibiono Ibom, shortly after Comrade ASUAKAK UMOH was affirmed and declared the party’s candidate for the Chairmanship poll, noted that the people of Ibiono Ibom are resolute in maintaining peace and order in their affairs.

In Eket where Hon AKAN TOMMEY emerged as the PDP Flag-bearer, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mkpisong FRANK ARCHIBONG congratulated the Chairmanship Candidate and the Councillorship candidates from the Local Government Area urging them to keep accountability and good governance as their watchword when they are voted into office.

In Ini LGA where Comrade INIBEHE UMAH was declared the winner, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. OFFIONG OFFOR expressed delight at the peaceful conduct of the exercise and sued for continued support for the administration of Governor UMO ENO.

Engr OTOBONG ESSIEN who emerged as the PDP chairmanship candidate in Ikono LGA assured the people of quality representation. In Essien Udim, commendations have trailed Engr ENOBONG PATRICK who has emerged the PDP Chairmanship Candidate. He thanked God and Governor ENO for his peaceful disposition to politics and governance.

In Udung Uko LGA, the consensus candidate for the chairmanship ticket, Elder GODWIN OKPONUNG, emphasized his commitment to service and the sustenance of peace, vowing to uphold the peace currently enjoyed across the area and pledging to undertake extensive developmental projects in line with the Governor’s Arise Agenda.

One Feared Dead as Protests Turns Violent in Abuja

One person was feared dead as armed security operatives clashed with protesters marching to Eagle Square from MKO Abiola National Stadium at the Central Business District junction.

 

Still on day two of the protest in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, the demonstration took another twist as policemen stationed at the Otovwodo axis of the East-West road allegedly shot and injured a yet-to-be-identified protester.

 

In Akwa Ibom, the police tear-gassed the crowd to disperse the protesters numbering about 15 as they gathered momentum at Ibom Plaza, Uyo. The incident started when the police on guard urged the protesters to vacate the area and move to Cenotaph, Unity Park, along Udo Udoma Avenue.

 

The Inspector General of Police, KAYODE EGEBETOKUN, said that police did not violate the “fundamental rights” of any of the protesters.

 

Mr. EGBETOKUN, in a statement released last night, said the police acted professionally in Abuja and other states where protests occurred despite the violent activities of some rioters who infiltrated the protests.

Governor Umo Eno Sues For Peace Ahead of August 1 Protest

Ahead of the planned nationwide protest, Governor UMO ENO has urged  youths and residents of the State to maintain peace to enable the State achieve its economic development plans as contained in the ARISE Agenda.

Addressing a cross section of critical stakeholders drawn from youth groups, Students, Market Association, NLC and TUC, Civil Society Organizations, and others in Uyo, the Governor acknowledged that it is a constitutional right of citizens to assemble and peacefully protest certain acts of government, but appealed that the State will benefit more in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.

He noted that the State under his leadership has made committed effort to improve the welfare of Akwa Ibom people through various interventions especially in the areas of government – labour relations, humanitarian initiatives, youth empowerment schemes, palliative, among others, stressing that the State’s status as one of the most peaceful has attracted tourists and investors.

The Governor further enumerated other achievements to include; donation of 36 fully-furnished two-bedroom bungalows and business support grant of 500,000 Naira to each of the beneficiaries.

While enumerating many other strides of the State government, the State Chief Executive appealed to the youths and all Akwa Ibomites to join hands with government to further on its development initiative for the good of all.

In their separate remarks, the youth groups, students, market association and organised labour commended the Governor for his commitment to the people’s welfare and development of the State, assuring that they were not part of the organizers of the planned protest and will not take part in it.

Similarly, Mr. HARRY UDOH who represented the CSOs commended the governor’s efforts at impacting every sector of the society through palliative, bursary, skill training and empowerment, prompt payment of salaries, and other entitlements to workers, and appealed for fairness and judicious distribution of palliative.

Also speaking, the Oku Ibom Ibibio and President-General of the Akwa Ibom Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers, Dr. Ntenyin SOLOMON ETUK acknowledged that the Governor has been very intentional in his development efforts, adding that the protest was not necessary in Akwa Ibom and urged everyone to continue to support him for more dividends of democracy.

On his part, the State commissioner of Police, CP WAHEED AYILARA said the police and other sister agencies were ready to provide the necessary protection to all including those who wish to protest, while reeling off conditions they must meet to do so.  He urged everyone to go about their legitimate businesses and to remain peaceful and law-abiding.
