Akwa Poly Students Cry to Police to Curb Rise in Insecurity in the School Community

Students of Akwa Ibom state Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area have called on the state government, and the police to address the insecurity issues surrounding the school community.

Recently, a final-year Computer Science student of the Polytechnic, identified as Prince, was shot dead by gunmen on Wednesday.( https://ifm1059.com/2025/01/16/fresh-graduate-of-akwapoly-killed-in-suspected-cult-clash/)

The attack as reported occurred in Prince’s residence along Abuja Street, Ikot Osurua community, where he was killed in front of his girlfriend. The victim, who was awaiting mobilisation for the compulsory National Youth Service Corps, sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach.

Speaking with our correspondent, AKANIMO OKON, Students of the Institution called for security to be heightened in the area, crying that they now live in fear of unknown gunmen.

INSPIRATION FM News reached out to the Akwa Ibom State Command Police Public Relations Officer, DSP TIMFON JOHN on the development, but she said there is no official report from the school about any insecurity issues. She however explained that the police are currently investigating the killing of the final year student who was gunned down at his lodge.

Governor Umo Eno Assures Civil Servants Will Enjoy N80,000 Minimum Wage from January

Following the conclusion of the Akwa Ibom Workers verification and authentic exercise, the State Governor, Pastor UMO ENO has announced that the payment of 80,000 Naira Minimum wage will commence in this January.

 

The Governor made the announcement yesterday at his hometown, Ikot Ekpene Udo, in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area, during the 2025 thanksgiving service of the Nigerian Union of Journalists – NUJ Akwa Ibom Council.

 

You would recall that Governor ENO in November last year, promised to pay 80, 000 naira, an amount higher than the 70, 000-naira minimum wage announced by the Federal Government. However, stressing the need to eliminate ghost workers from the system, the governor said the new wage will be paid when the workers audit is concluded.

 

Delivering his address at the thanksgiving service, Governor UMO ENO noted that report of the verification exercise will be presented today, and that civil servants in the state will receive the new minimum wage from November 2024 till date.

Akwa Ibom State Government Reacts to Cholera Outbreak in Eastern Obolo

The attention of the Ministry of Health has been drawn what appears to be a few cases of a disease with symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting in Emeroke community of Eastern Obolo LGA early this morning.
The information provided also suggested a few fatalities in the community, that though not yet verified, may be linked to the disease.
The Ministry of Health in line with the proactive stance on issues of community health by our Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, Ph.D, has immediately dispatched a disease surveillance team, led by the State Epidemiologist, to the community to confirm and begin enlightenment campaigns on ways to mitigate the outbreak.
The Ministry of Health hereby advises members of the community and the environs that as an immediate intervention, proper hand washing should be done especially after defecation, that drinking water should be boiled before consumption and all persons with symptoms of diarrhoea or vomiting should seek immediate treatment at the nearest health facility.
Furthermore, the Ministry reminds community leaders to enforce the existing ban on open defecation by the Government.
While the State Government is working on a long-term solution, the Ministry is currently mobilising supplies to the community as an immediate and short-term measure.

NDLEA Seizes Huge Stash of Illicit Drugs

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) seized 779.26 Kg of illicit drugs in Akwa Ibom in 2024.

Briefing journalists in Uyo, the state Commander of the agency, MRS OBOT BASSEY said that the command also secured the conviction of 56 drug offenders in the year under review.

The commander added that during the period, the command counseled 204 people and successfully rehabilitated and integrated into the society 41 with substance use disorder.

She said that the Akwa command of the agency has remained steadfast and committed to reducing the demand for illicit drugs and other substances of abuse.

While commending Governor UMO ENO for his support to the agency, the NDLEA commander regretted that the command had only two utility vehicles to cover 31 local government areas of the state, coupled with other challenges.

According to the NDLEA State Commander, cannabis sativa remains the most prevalent drug commonly abused and trafficked by people in the state.
