Fuel Scarcity Looms in Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Environs

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN, Calabar Depot, yesterday, vowed to shut down its depots and over 400 petrol stations owned by its members over incessant police harassment.

IPMAN Calabar Depot is made up of over 500 members from Makurdi, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states and they are members of the eastern zone of the association.

The Eastern Zone of IPMAN has been at daggers drawn with officers of the Nigeria Police Force over alleged attempts by the police to foist a factional leadership for IPMAN across Enugu, Aba, Rivers, and Cross River.

Robert Obi,the Calabar Depot chairman of IPMAN while addressing journalists said it had become a habit for the police to harass the leadership.
Obi said: “We want to draw the attention of the general public to the continued harassment of our leadership and some members of IPMAN in the name of enforcing a directive by a top Deputy Inspector-General of Police.

“Besides, we would go further to shut down the over 20 depots in our branch and close down over 400 petrol stations to protest the attack on our office and harassment of our members. We have over suffered in the hands of the police.

“The police have no business in how we run our affairs; neither do they have the right to determine who our members are.
“They have attempted to take over our secretariat in Port Harcourt, our members resisted them there. Now they have come down to Calabar to chase our members out of our secretariat and we shall continue to resist such illegal moves.

“Our last option is to embark on an indefinite strike in the days ahead. It is the economy and the public that would suffer the consequences of the strike as other branches would not hesitate to join us in the fight to liberate IPMAN in the zone. So, we call on the federal government and police authorities to call their men to order.

Public Relations Officer the Cross River State Police Command, DSP Irene Ugbo, who was contacted by our Correspondent said the Command was not aware of the matter but promised to launch an investigation into the matter immediately to forestall any breach of Peace.

Akwa Ibom State Government Frowns at UnAuthorized, Illegal Fees Collection in Public Schools

The Akwa Ibom State Government has frowned at unauthorized levies and fees purportedly imposed on pupils and students in public primary and secondary schools in the State.

The Commissioner for Education, Mrs Idongesit Etiebet stated this in an interview with Journalists over the weekend, shortly after the independence day celebration in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State Capital.

According to the Commissioner, several reports have been brought to her notice and accordingly, the investigative team from her office had long swing into action. She however, reassured that on conclusion of all Investigations, all erring school heads and Principals will be sanctioned accordingly.

Etiebet who reiterated that Education is free and compulsory in all public Primary and Secondary Schools in the state, cautioned those Head Teachers and Principals who are bent on sabotaging the State Government’s effort to desist from such actions.

According to the Education Boss, the massive rehabilitation of dilapidated structures in public schools, ongoing fencing projects, Prompt payment of WAEC fees, payment of subvention, recruitment of teachers, prompt payment of Teachers salaries, amongst others, are clear justification that Education remains a priority in the Governor Emmanuel’ completion agenda. She called on Teachers to compliment the state Government’s effort by discharging their responsibilities in line with the government’s Education policies.

Meanwhile, Parents and Guardians have again been advised to report all illegal charges and irregularities in public schools to the Akwa Ibom State Government through educationmonitoring1@gmail.com or 09035734549 and 07010293974 (WhatsApp and SMS only).
