Akwa Ibom State Government and Labour on Collision Course Over Minimum Wage Implementation

The Nigeria Labour Congress, Akwa Ibom chapter says that the state Government and labour could be on a collision course if implementations date for the 80, 000 naira minimum wage is not concluded soon.

You would recall that the NLC at the national level has announced December 1 as the deadline for all the states to comply with the payment of the new minimum wage or face a strike, while the Akwa Ibom State Government stated that the payment will be done once the verification exercise is completed in the state, citing fears of paying ghost workers as reason for a wide-ranging audit.

But speaking on INSPIRATION FM’s current affairs programme, talk radio with ADEBAYO SAMUEL, the Akwa Ibom NLC chairman, Comrade SUNNY JAMES gave the State Government one week to announce the implementation date, or workers will be forced to down tools.

This comes following criticism that the Akwa Ibom State Government, which had last month pledged to pay Civil Servants 80, 000 naira minimum wage, has continue to deny workers their rightful wages amidst rising economic hardship.
