Rivers NUJ Demand Apology from Police Over Harassment of Members at “Take It Back” Protest

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council, has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Rivers State Police Command to tender an unreserved public apology over the assault on five journalists during a peaceful protest in Port Harcourt or risk a statewide media blackout.

In a statement jointly signed by the Council Chairman, Comrade Paul Bazia, and Secretary, Dr. Ijeoma Tubosia, the NUJ condemned the actions of police officers involved, demanding their immediate identification and prosecution.

“The NUJ, as a watchdog of society, will not sit idly by while media practitioners are subjected to barbarism and brutality. Enough is enough,” the statement warned, noting that any further attack on journalists in the state would be “vehemently resisted.”

The union described the incident as “unprovoked, barbaric, and inhuman,” saying it amounted to a gross violation of the rights of the affected journalists.

Those assaulted include Charles Opurum of Channels TV, Allwell Ene of Naija FM, Soibelemari Oruwari of Nigeria Info, Ikezam Godswill of AIT, and Femi Ogunkhilede of Super FM.

The journalists were tear-gassed while covering the protest, with Opurum beaten, and detained by security operatives.

Expressing deep regret over the incident, the NUJ lamented that an institution tasked with safeguarding lives and property has turned its weapons on citizens, particularly journalists performing their lawful duties.

Despite the provocation, the union reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement and partnership with the police in the interest of peace and national development.

Governor Umo Eno and 10 Others Sue Presidency Over State of Emergency in Rivers

Governor Umo Eno is among 11 governors of the Peoples Democratic Party who have approached the Supreme Court challenging the powers President Bola Tinubu to suspend a democratically elected structure of a state.

The suit filed by the governors of Akwa Ibom, Adamawa, Enugu, Osun, Oyo, Bauchi, Plateau, Delta, Taraba, Zamfara, and Bayelsa states also challenged the declaration of a state of emergency rule in Rivers State.

In a suit marked: SC/CV/329/2025, predicated the summon on eight grounds, the plaintiffs urged the Supreme Court to determine if the President had the powers to suspend a democratically elected structure of a state.

They also asked the apex court to determine if the way and manner the President pronounced the state of emergency declaration in Rivers State was not in contravention of the 1999 Constitution.

Amongst others, all 11 governors in the suit, filed through their state Attorney Generals, prayed the court to determine the following,

Whether upon a proper construction and interpretation of the provisions of Sections 1(2), 5(2), 176, 180, 188 and 305 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria can lawfully suspend or in any manner whatsoever interfere with the offices of a Governor and the Deputy Governor of any of the component 36 States of the Federation of Nigeria and replace same with his own unelected nominee as a Sole Administrator, under the guise of, or pursuant to, a Proclamation of a State of Emergency in any of the State of the Federation, particularly in any of the Plaintiffs States?

Whether upon a proper construction and interpretation of the provisions of Sections 1(2), 4(6), 11(4) & (5), 90, 105 and 305 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria can lawfully suspend the House of Assembly of any of the component 36 States of the Federation of Nigeria, under the guise of, or pursuant to, a Proclamation of a State of Emergency in any of such States, particularly in any of the Plaintiffs States?

Whether the consequent threat by the first Defendant acting on behalf of the President to the States of the Federation, including the Plaintiffs’ States, to the effect that the offices of the Governor and Deputy Governor of the States can be suspended by the President by virtue of a Proclamation of a State of Emergency, is not in contravention of the provisions of Sections 1(2), 4(6), 5(2), 11(2) and (3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 and inconsistent with the principles of constitutional federalism?

Meanwhile, the respondents in the suit are to within 14 days after the service of the summons on them, inclusive of the day of such service, cause an appearance to be entered for them.

April 8, 2025 NUPENG, PENGASSAN Kick As NNPCL Talks of External Recruitment

NUPENG, PENGASSAN Kick As NNPCL Talks of External Recruitment

The decision by the new management of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited, NNPCL, to recruit external staff outside the organization has gotten the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers kicking, NUPENG, as well as the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN.

Both unions expressed their grievances in a letter sent on Monday, in which they questioned why the company’s Group Executive Council, GEC, would prefer to fill top management positions with externally recruited personnel, thus excluding internal staff members.

In a letter dated 4 April and addressed to the NNPC Chief Human Resources Officer, NUPENG and PENGASSAN insisted that they cannot accept or support the recruitment of senior management staff from outside the company.

The letter, titled “Filling of top management positions in NNPC Limited with externally recruited personnel is unacceptable to PENGASSAN and NUPENG GEC,” was signed by GEC Secretary at PENGASSAN, Amaoge Chukwudi and chairman, Solomon Orieji; and the GEC Secretary at NUPENG, Paulosa Paulosa, alongside its chairman, Baba Kaumi. They also copied the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, the Executive Vice President, Business Services, NNPCL, and the presidents of PENGASSAN and NUPENG.

We extend our warm congratulations to the newly appointed Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) and Board Members of NNPC Limited. We wish them success in their new roles and pray for excellence in their assignments.

“However, we must draw urgent attention to a matter of serious concern to avert avoidable consequences. Based on past experiences, we have observed a recurring trend whenever a new GCEO is appointed externally – the temptation to fill top management positions with external recruitment rather than promoting staff members from within NNPC Ltd.

As a matter of caution, we must state clearly that we cannot accept, accommodate, or support the recruitment of senior and management staff from outside NNPC Limited, and that any plan in this direction should be stopped immediately,” the letter read in part.

The unions stated that NNPCL is home to thousands of experienced, competent, and dedicated Nigerian professionals across various fields. They argued that these individuals, many of whom are their members, have devoted many years to sustaining the legacies of the company and are eager to take on higher responsibilities.

Denying them career advancement opportunities and overlooking them in favour of external recruitment is grossly unjust and wasteful, and it will also disrupt the company’s steady progress towards greater profitability and efficiency.

“We must therefore caution against any unjust action that undermines the career growth of deserving staff members of our company. If this warning is ignored, we cannot guarantee the continuation of industrial harmony within NNPC Limited,” they stated in the letter.

They warned that the letter serves to put the management and the Board of NNPC Limited on notice that PENGASSAN and NUPENG categorically reject any recruitment or appointment of senior or management staff above the SS6 cadre (specifically within the SS5 to M2 cadre) from outside the organisation.

Any attempt to do so will be met with strong resistance, including a total shutdown of operations. Please accept our assurances of continued support and regards,” the letter concluded.
