United States Government Sanctions Iran’s Oil Minister

The United States has imposed sanctions on Iran’s Oil Minister, MOHSEN PAKNEJAD, as well as several Hong Kong-flagged vessels that are part of a shadow fleet used to conceal Iranian oil shipments.

In a statement released yesterday, the U.S. Treasury Department announced that PAKNEJAD is responsible for overseeing the export of tens of billions of dollars’ worth of Iranian oil and has allocated billions more to Iran’s armed forces for export purposes.

The statement further indicated that the Treasury Department also sanctioned the owners and operators of vessels that have either delivered Iranian oil to China or transported it from storage there. These entities are based in multiple jurisdictions, including India and China.

The Senate yesterday passed a vote of confidence in its President, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

The vote of confidence in Akpabio was passed unanimously during Thursday’s plenary, as senators reaffirmed their support for Akpabio’s leadership amid recent controversies.

The decision followed a motion moved by Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central).

This development is coming on the heels of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s appearance at the summit of the International Parliamentary Union, IPU in New York falsely alleging her suspension was due to her sexual harassment allegation against the President of Nigeria Senate.

Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Passes Law to Establish Akwa Ibom State

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly passed into law “A Bill for a Law to Provide for the Establishment of the Akwa Ibom State University of Education, Afaha Nsit, and to Make Provisions for Its Administration and Other Connected Matters.”

This decision followed a report presented to the House by the Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Hon. KENIM ONOFIOK, during yesterday’s plenary session.

In presenting the report, Hon. ONOFIOK emphasized that the bill is designed to provide high-quality teacher education programs and create opportunities for Akwa Ibom children seeking admission into degree-awarding institutions. The university established under this bill will facilitate these opportunities.

As a result, the bill was passed into law and will take effect today, Thursday, 13 March 2025, as announced by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. UDEME OTONG.

It is worth noting that on Wednesday, 26 February 2025, the House Committee on Education held a public hearing to gather inputs from stakeholders in the development of the bill.

Regional Trials Begin in Akwa Ibom Ahead of Niger-Delta Sports Festival

 

As the Niger Delta Sports Festival, tagged UYO 2025, draws nearer, Akwa Ibom State is gearing up to make a strong showing across disciplines.

 

The state trials began in full with budding talents from the Eket Senatorial District competing for one of 316 coveted spots to represent the state at the inaugural event.

 

From the pitch to the tracks, mat, sand, river, pool, and courts, young athletes gave their all, showcasing their skills in various sports, including football, track and field, weightlifting, traditional wrestling, swimming, basketball, boxing, tennis, handball, canoeing, and volleyball.

 

The technical lead of the Akwa Ibom State Liaison Committee, Coach CATHERINE EWA-EKUTA OLY, expressed her excitement about the talents on display, hinting that a bright future awaits Akwa Ibom talents.

 

Our Head of Sports, Adebayo Samuel reports that the trials, held in various locations across the Eket Senatorial District, including Eket town, Ibeno LGA, and Oron, saw a high level of competition, with many young athletes displaying exceptional skills and energy.

 

However, the Commissioner for Sports, Elder PAUL BASSEY, visited the trials and expressed satisfaction with the turnout and level of competition displayed by the athletes.
