Speaker, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Donates Desks to Comprehensive High School, Idu Uruan.

The Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, has donated school desks to Comprehensive High School, Idu Uruan.
The Personal Assistant to the Speaker on General Duties, Mr. Godswill Bassey, who made the donation on the Speaker’s behalf recently, said the gesture was the Speaker’s way of reiterating his commitment to the development of this school and a way of creating an education-friendly environment for the students

“Comprehensive Secondary School, Idu Uruan is a school after the Speaker’s heart. Around February this year, he donated White Boards, Board Markers and Magnetic Dusters to this school through the foundation, the RHABYESS Foundation. He also facilitated the construction of an Assembly Hall and 4-Classrooms Blocks through the Inter Ministerial Direct Labour Committee,” he said.

He said the Desks is to cater for the needs of students whose parents could not afford desk.

Receiving the Chairs, the Vice Principal administration, Mr. Ephraim Ekpenyong and the Councilor representing Central Uruan Ward-1, Hon. Daniel Ufe, thanked the Speaker for his continued show of love and support to the educational sector and constituents.

Project Alert Speaks on Advocacy Towards Discrimination Against Persons With Disabilities Law

A recent study done by Project Alert shows that over 90% of women in Akwa Ibom living with disabilities have either been abused or have experienced violence. Also, most of these women are young persons.

For Project Alert which has provided interventions for women affected by Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) since 1999, they are also very interested about the plight of women living with disabilities and the issues of SGBV as it affects them.

In this interview, the founder, Barrister Josephine Effah Chukwuma, speaks about efforts and advocacy geared towards the discrimination against persons living with disabilities law, awaiting assent by Governor Udom Emmanuel and how the law can help reduce the level of violence against this category of women.

Electoral Act Review; Akwa Ibom PDP Faults Direct Primaries Proposal

Part of the Senate’s recent amendment of the Electoral Act, have been faulted by political stakeholders across the country, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Akwa Ibom State, who considers certain clauses in the amendment, disturbing.
Speaking on  position of his party, the Akwa Ibom State Publicity Secretary of PDP, Mr. Borono Bassey, said the seeming imposition of direct primaries on political parties, by the Senate through the amendment, is against ideal democratic practice, pointing that parties should be allowed the freedom to decide which method to adopt according to peculiarities and circumstances.
Arguing further, Bassey noted that direct primaries for the election of party candidates is cost-intensive and will raise the budget of primary elections higher than realizable; a concern he said is capable of causing various degrees of corrupt practices and logistics crisis during the exercise.
“We are talking about a system where every member of a political party votes in a primary election and in this state, we have seen a situation where a certain party that is an opposition to the PDP adopting the direct primaries and their members fighting over authentic party register and allegations of hijacking the process by certain paymasters who fund the party”
“Different political parties have tested various kinds of primaries and the flaws there constitute part of the inconveniences of this new system.”
“Imposing direct primaries on all political parties reeks of undue interference on the internal democracy of Political Parties by the Legislature”, he said.
While speaking of the credibility of the direct primaries, he referred to the antecedents of failures of the method in previous practices by parties that had earlier adopted it.
In his words, “through the direct primaries, there is a question of credibility as votes are usually allotted in an arbitrary manner to preferred candidates.”
“In 2018 a certain political party allotted 14.8 million votes to her presidential candidate only for the same candidate to go to a general election and have votes less than half of that figure. The Same thing played out in the Lagos State Gubernatorial Primaries.”
Recall that the Nigerian Senate within the week passed an amendment to the just Electoral Act which changed some clauses in the act to include the practice of direct primaries by political parties, electronic transmission of result by INEC, among others.

Recruit NYSC Members to Battle Insecurity – Gov. Fayemi

Governor Fayemi of Ekiti State has suggested that members of the National Youth Service Corps be used to battle the security challenges facing the country.

He made the suggestion at the seventh lecture series to mark the 2021 annual birthday ceremony of Chief Babatunde Oduyoye, the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Political Affairs in Ibadan.

Fayemi said he believed that one of the cheapest and fastest ways to tackle the insecurity was to amend the law setting up the National Youths Service Corps.
“With this, we can use the existing orientation camps to train willing and able graduates to reflate the security personnel under a special arrangement that will be worked out.
“That way, the fund that is currently deployed to the NYSC can be used with just some additional funding, which could be sourced through a national emergency fund for the next five to ten years.

“Those who cannot join the military services can serve in their community without pay if we must still retain the NYSC for everyone.
“To incentivize those who may volunteer to serve, they will have a separate certificate and medal of honor in addition to having priority for military, paramilitary and civil or public service recruitment afterwards
