Former Chelsea and Italian Striker Gianluca Vialli Dies at 58

The world of football has been hit by another tragedy as former Italian striker and manager Gianluca Vialli has died at the age 58.

Vialli was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2017 but given the clear in April 2020,but he was later re-diagnosed in 2021.

He announced a temporary leave from his role with Italy’s national team in December, 2022 to focus on his health.

Vialli made 59 appearances for Italy, making his debut in 1985, a year after joining Sampdoria where he would win the Serie A title and European Cup Winners’ Cup during his 8 seasons with the club. He  helped Sampdoria reach the 1992 European Cup final but after losing to Ajax, he moved to Juventus for a world record fee of £12m. Vialli spent four seasons with the old Ladies of Turin, winning the Champions League, Uefa Cup and Serie A titles.

He joined Chelsea on a free transfer in 1996 and became player-manager in 1998. He was the first Italian to manage a Premier League side, taking over from Ruud Gullit late in the season, and went on to lead the Chelsea to victory in the League Cup, Uefa Cup Winners’ Cup and Uefa Super Cup.

He also guided Chelsea to victory in the 2000 FA Cup final and Charity Shield but was sacked early in the following season after a poor start.

The striker also had a short spell at Watford, then in the second tier, during the 2001-02 season but was dismissed after the Hornets only finished 14th.

INEC Laments Poor PVC Collection Rate, Plans More Sensitization

Atleast 6.7 million Nigerians are yet to collect their permanent voter cards (PVCs) as we get closer to the 2023 general elections.

Data obtained from the state offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission  revealed that 6.7 m PVCs were locked up in INEC safes across 17 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

INEC began the  the collection window for PVCs since December 12,2022 and to end on January 22.

The INEC National Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, Festus Okoye, disclosed in a statement that with effect from January 6 -15,2023  the collection of the PVCs will be devolved to the ward level after which collection would be moved to the local government areas.

The FCT has 460,643 uncollected PVCs as of December 24, while In Edo state, 661,783 voter cards have not been collected as of December 29. Ondo and Ekiti states accounted for  300,000 and 205,127 uncollected cards, respectively, as of December 15.

He explained that the collection of PVC is going on daily including Saturdays and Sundays (excluding public holidays) from 9am to 3pm at INEC offices across the 18 local government areas of the state.

Away from his wealthy lifestyle, Chukwueze has started five of the 13 domestic league games he has played in and only produced one assist. He  scored his first goal in the 2022–23 La Liga season, on December 31 against Alaves.
Nevertheless, he has excelled in the Copa del Rey and the Europa conference league, with two goals and two assists.

Dakkada FC Start 2023 With Thanksgiving Service

Ahead of the commencement of the 2022/2023 Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL, Uyo-based outfit, Dakkada FC held a special thanksgiving service, Sunday, January 1, 2023, with the theme “The Chosen Ones of God” taken from 1Corinthians 1:27-29.

The service was held at the Apostolic Church Afaha Oku district, Oku Village road, Uyo and was attended by high-profile dignitaries including the Deputy Chief Whip of Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly and Executive Member of Nigeria Football Federation, Otuekong Nse Essien, who was the Special Guest of Honour, Commissioner-1 of the Akwa Ibom state Local Service Commission, Honourable Saturday Akpan, the state Director of Sports, Elder Ifiok Duff, the state Chapter Chairman of SWAN, Comrade Emmanuel Akpan and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, who sent in a representative, among others.

In his sermon entitled “The safety of everything with God”, the presiding pastor, pastor A. A. Okon lauded the club for committing the upcoming season to God and gave scriptural evidence that God will not disappoint them. He offered special prayers and blessed them.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman of Dakkada, Coach Aniedi Dickson, said that the club’s decision to hold the thanksgiving service was borne out of the demonstration of God’s love, blessing and faithfulness towards them over the past few years.

“Over the past few years, we have crisscrossed the length and breadth of the country executing NPFL matches and God has ensured that no reports of any bad incidents like accident or attacks have ever emanated from our camp, to His glory”, he said.

Mr. Dickson thanked the Governor of Akwa Ibom state, His Excellency, Mr. Udom Emmanuel and appreciated the state Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Sir Monday Uko, for the employment platform which has been created through Dakkada and made a cash donation to the Church that he described as significant because according to him, it was a sacrificial contribution from all the players, coaches, officials and management staff members without any member of the club being left out.

There was time to dine and wine at a sumptuous reception which followed immediately after the service at Dakkada Club House where hymns were sung, goodwill messages received and refreshments taken including the sharing of a 10kg bag of rice to each member of the club which was donated by the Commissioner, Sir Monday Uko.

Dakkada who have been drawn into Group B will begin their campaign with a trip to Bayelsa United when the 2022/2023 NPFL gets underway this Sunday, January 8, 2023.
