Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa Says He’s Not Against Any Political Rallies

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has said his administration would always abide by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in respecting the fundamental rights of individuals but will ensure that the prevailing peace and security of the state was not compromised.

Senator Diri stated this on Wednesday at the 158th state executive council meeting in Government House, Yenagoa.
The governor explained that the administration would not stop any group from holding rallies in the state but emphasised that it would be unwise and counter-productive at a time lasting peace was being sought to address the political crisis in Rivers State.

He noted that Rivers and Bayelsa were sister states and that whatever happened in Rivers had a ripple effect in Bayelsa, and enjoined well-meaning Bayelsans to work with the government in maintaining law and order in the state.

His words: “Let me make this clear. We are not a government that goes against the rule of law. We cherish and protect the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. And in so doing, we abide by every bit of the Constitution.
A state of emergency has been imposed in Rivers State. President Bola Tinubu has the power to do so. All we can do from our end is to see how we can bring lasting peace to Rivers State.
“Bayelsa and Rivers are sister states and whatever happens there has some degree of effect on our state and vice versa. And then some persons say they want to hold a mega rally and all that here.
“We are not yet in a political season. l am not stopping anybody from exercising his fundamental human rights but as the chief security officer of the state and with information at my disposal, we must keep the peace of the state. Nobody should come and rock the peace and security of this state.”

The governor noted that the proper protocol for such rallies should be followed by first informing the state government just as wife of the President and First Lady had done about her visit to the state on Thursday on the invitation of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

He urged people of the state to turn out en masse to accord the First Lady a rousing reception.

“Iceman” Van Kilmer Dies at 65

Val Kilmer, one of the biggest Hollywood actors of the 1990s who shot to fame playing Iceman in the original “Top Gun”, has died aged 65 after a career of memorable hits and on-set bust ups.

The cause of death was pneumonia, his daughter Mercedes Kilmer told the New York Times on Tuesday, which was the first publication to announce the news.

He battled throat cancer after being diagnosed in 2014 and appeared in the “Top Gun” sequel and a 2021 documentary appearing physically diminished and with a raspy voice.

His film credits include blockbusters such as Oliver Stone’s “The Doors,” in which he played Jim Morrison, as well as a short-lived stint as Batman in “Batman Forever” in 1995 opposite Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones.

Once you’re a star, you’re always a star. It’s just ‘what level?’” he told the Hollywood Reporter in an interview in 2012.

And I was in some big, wonderful movies and enjoyed a lot of success, but I didn’t sort of secure that position.”

The Cross River APC Chairman, Alphonsus Eba, stated that the party is committed to strengthening its grassroots structures and mobilising support to ensure victory come 2027.

He described Senator Jarigbe’s tenure as underwhelming and assured party members that the APC would file a formidable candidate to challenge him in the next election cycle.

Fubara Depressed by Emergency Rule in Rivers

Suspended governor of Rivers State; Siminalayi Fubara, says he feels depressed over the declaration of emergency rule in the state.

Speaking when Muslim leaders visited him at his private residence in Port Harcourt, Fubara said he and his team were depressed over the situation.

We, as humans, might feel a bit depressed because of the situation. Maybe because of what we are seeing, but we might not understand that what is deeper and beyond us happened,” he said. “But in everything, we have decided to give glory to the Almighty God.

“No matter what we see, we must remain steadfast. In all things, we give glory to Almighty God. I believe that, in the end, we will emerge stronger. If God could be patient with Noah to allow even the snail to enter the Ark, then patience remains an essential virtue in our struggle.

President Bola Tinubu had on March 18,  declared a state of emergency in Rivers, citing the prolonged political crisis in the state between the governor and 27 lawmakers of the Rivers state house of Assembly.

Tinubu also suspended Fubara as governor, Ngozi Odu as deputy governor and all members of the House of Assembly for an initial period of six months. He appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, a retired Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), as sole administrator.
