Federal Government Warns of Heavy Rainfall and Flooding in States of the Federation

The Federal Government has predicted heavy rains and floods in 30 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The high-flood risk state includes Akwa Ibom and other states across the country.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, JOSEPH UTSEV, on Thursday, said coastal and riverine flooding would be experienced in some parts of the South-South geopolitical zone of the country due to a rise in sea level.

Utsev stated this during the public presentation of the 2025 Annual Flood Outlook by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) in Abuja.

The 2025 Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) was segmented into three parts to address the pressing challenges of flood disasters and provide information for mitigation, especially in the most vulnerable communities

The minister disclosed that flooding remained one of the most devastating natural disasters in Nigeria with climate change accelerating its frequency and severity.

He revealed that 1,249 communities in 176 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across 30 states and the FCT fall within high-risk flood zones this year, while an additional 2,187 communities in 293 LGAs face moderate flood risks. Key risk areas include Abia, Benue, Lagos, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Jigawa, among others.

April 10, 2025 Senate President Godswill Akpabio Petitions Police IG Over Natasha Akpoti’s Assassination Accusation

Senate President Godswill Akpabio Petitions Police IG Over Natasha Akpoti’s Assassination Accusation

The President of the Senate, GODSWILL AKPABIO, has formally petitioned the Inspector General of Police, KAYODE EGBETOKUN, over what he described as a criminally defamatory and inciting allegation made by Senator NATASHA AKPOTI-UDUAGHAN, who accused him of plotting her assassination.

In the petition dated April 3 and copied to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, LATEEF FAGBEMI (SAN), AKPABIO described the claims as heinous lies intended to damage his reputation, incite public unrest, and endanger his life.

The controversy stems from a public speech by AKPOTI-UDUAGHAN on April 1 in Kogi State, where she alleged that AKPABIO had directed former Kogi State Governor YAHAYA BELLO to assassinate her within Kogi State in order to make it appear that her constituents were behind the attack.

Responding to the accusation, AKPABIO stated in his petition that the allegation, made without evidence, was politically motivated and designed to manipulate public sentiment.

AKPABIO called for an immediate police investigation and urged the prosecution of Senator AKPOTI-UDUAGHAN under laws covering criminal defamation, incitement, false accusation, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

The Senate President also stressed the impact of the allegation due to its widespread coverage on TV, radio, print, and social media.

He concluded the petition by stating the need to hold public officials accountable for statements capable of undermining national peace and democratic institutions.

This latest clash between AKPABIO and AKPOTI-UDUAGHAN follows an earlier controversy in which she accused the Senate President of sexual harassment — a claim that contributed to her suspension from the upper legislative chamber for alleged misconduct.

Rivers NUJ Demand Apology from Police Over Harassment of Members at “Take It Back” Protest

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council, has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Rivers State Police Command to tender an unreserved public apology over the assault on five journalists during a peaceful protest in Port Harcourt or risk a statewide media blackout.

In a statement jointly signed by the Council Chairman, Comrade Paul Bazia, and Secretary, Dr. Ijeoma Tubosia, the NUJ condemned the actions of police officers involved, demanding their immediate identification and prosecution.

“The NUJ, as a watchdog of society, will not sit idly by while media practitioners are subjected to barbarism and brutality. Enough is enough,” the statement warned, noting that any further attack on journalists in the state would be “vehemently resisted.”

The union described the incident as “unprovoked, barbaric, and inhuman,” saying it amounted to a gross violation of the rights of the affected journalists.

Those assaulted include Charles Opurum of Channels TV, Allwell Ene of Naija FM, Soibelemari Oruwari of Nigeria Info, Ikezam Godswill of AIT, and Femi Ogunkhilede of Super FM.

The journalists were tear-gassed while covering the protest, with Opurum beaten, and detained by security operatives.

Expressing deep regret over the incident, the NUJ lamented that an institution tasked with safeguarding lives and property has turned its weapons on citizens, particularly journalists performing their lawful duties.

Despite the provocation, the union reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement and partnership with the police in the interest of peace and national development.
