Methodist Prelate Charges Federal Government on State of Insecurity in The Nation

The Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence Dr. OLIVER ALI ABA, has called on the federal government to take swift and decisive action in addressing the ongoing insecurity affecting Benue, Plateau, and other parts of the country.

Aba made the appeal in an Easter message delivered at Trinity Methodist Church, Tinubu, Lagos State, where he expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in Plateau and Benue.

He emphasised that the situation is intolerable and demands urgent intervention to halt the killings.

He condemned recent tragedies in the states, including the massacre of over 100 people in the Boko area and unrest in Otobi-Akpa, Benue State, lamenting a growing societal disregard for the sanctity of human life.

Governor Umo Eno Emphasizes the Purpose of Easter

Governor UMO ENO has emphasized Easter as a time of sacrifice, hope, and unconditional love.

Governor Eno, who stated this in his Easter broadcast, acknowledged the economic challenges facing the state but expressed optimism that, like the resurrection story, Akwa Ibom would rise above adversity.

He noted that prudent resource management had started yielding positive results and thanked citizens for their understanding, prayers, and continued faith in his administration’s efforts to expand opportunities and improve lives.

Highlighting achievements under administration, the governor reported significant strides in infrastructure, healthcare, education, housing, tourism, and transport. He stated that beyond capital projects, his government had prioritized social welfare, especially for the most vulnerable in the society.

Among the initiatives mentioned were the construction of over 205 Arise Compassionate Homes, the Arise Elderly Care Initiative benefitting 600 elders with monthly stipends, and the enrollment of more than 15,000 vulnerable individuals in the Arise Care Insurance Scheme. He also spoke of N60 billion already paid in gratuities and the provision of food vouchers for the poorest, alongside youth empowerment programmes.

JAMB Moves UTME 2025 Date

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has moved the commencement date of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) from Friday, April 25 to Thursday, April 24, 2025.

JAMB made this change known in a message shared on its official X handle on Saturday. The Board explained that the shift was made to make room for important duties involving the board and its partner agencies.

To help students prepare, JAMB has made it possible for all registered candidates to print their UTME Notification Slips starting Saturday, April 19, 2025.

The slip contains all the needed information such as the exam date, time, venue, and other instructions. This will help candidates plan well ahead and reduce confusion or last-minute rush on the exam day.

To access the slip, candidates must visit the JAMB website at www.jamb.gov.ng, select the ‘2025 UTME Slip Printing’ link, enter their registration number, and then print their exam slip.

The Board also advised candidates to visit their centres before the exam day. This will help them locate the venue early enough and avoid delays that could affect their performance.

Candidates are expected to appear at centres within the towns they selected during registration, as no one will be posted outside their chosen areas.

JAMB urged all candidates to take the printing of their exam slips seriously and ensure they know their exam schedule well in advance.

Akwa Ibom State Sports Ministry to Probe Athletes’ Perfomances at Niger-Delta Sports Festival Ahead of National Festival

The Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Sports has announced it will set up a committee of enquiry to review the performance of the State athletes and Coaches at the just concluded Niger Delta Sports Festival, which held in Uyo.

Akwa Ibom returned in 6th position with a medal haul of 9 golds, 14 silvers and 14 bronze medals totaling 37, out of the nine states of the Niger Delta that participated in the competition.

It was also gathered that Akwa Ibom athletes who were officially camped in Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centre Ikot Ada Idem, Ibiono Ibom went haywire over alleged underpayment of camping (pre-competition) allowances.

The aggrieved athletes it was further gathered blocked the entrance of the Centre for receiving just 5,000 Naira as their camping allowance instead of the expected N30,000

However, the Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey while addressing the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria – SWAN, Akwa Ibom State chapter on Friday said the inauguration of the committee was an attempt to address past shortcomings and improve future performances of the state athletes.

He said the committee will investigate incessant complaints and protests by state athletes and to assess the overall performance of the team.

While describing some of the incidents that happened in the camp of Team Akwa Ibom as unpleasant and embarrassing, the commissioner said it was important to have a committee to investigate, analyse and give recommendations in order to avoid such occurrences in future.

“I was hardly available during the games, so we are planning to set up a committee to look into some of the incidents that happened in our camp during the Niger Delta Sports Festival, not for punitive measures, but for proper findings and recommendations to guide us in future,” he said.

Elder Bassey, who was not satisfied with the position of the state team at the end of the festival, said it was now time to take sports development to the grassroots level and discover talents who will give the state better representation in future competitions, adding that the plan is in line with the ARISE Agenda of Governor Umo Eno.

He thanked the Governor for creating an enabling environment for the hosting of the festival and the Niger Delta Development Commission – NDDC for the face-lift given to sports infrastructure in the state and promised to set up a Facility Management Committee to ensure proper maintenance of the sporting facilities in the state.

Earlier, the state chairman of SWAN, Emmanuel Akpan congratulated the Commissioner on his appointment and described it as well deserved. He thanked the Governor for creating a separate ministry for sports, adding that the move will ensure proper development of sports in the state.
