Atiku Abubakar Calls for Merger to Topple APC in 2027

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has called for a merger of opposition political parties in order to wrestle power from the ruling All Progressives Congress; APC.

Atiku, made the call in a statement by his media aide, Paul Ibe, warned against the likelihood of Nigeria slipping into a one-party state.

According to the statement, the former Vice President made the remarks when he hosted the National Executive Committee of the Inter-Party Advisory Council Nigeria, IPAC.

He said the project of protecting democracy in Nigeria was not about just one man.

You have come here today to say that we should cooperate in order to promote democracy. But the truth of the matter is that our democracy is fast becoming a one-party system; and, of course, you know that when we have a one-party system, we should just forget about democracy,” he stated.

Atiku, therefore, tasked the leadership of IPAC, led by its National President, Yabagi Sani, on the need for the opposition political parties to come together and create a more formidable front that will salvage Nigeria’s democracy from sliding into a one-party state.

He said, “We have all seen how the APC is increasingly turning Nigeria into a dictatorship of one party. If we don’t come together to challenge what the ruling party is trying to create, our democracy will suffer for it, and the consequences of it will affect the generations yet unborn.”

Atiku also berated the Independent National Electoral Commission for allegedly conducting the worst general elections in the country.

He stated, “Recently again in the off-season election in three states, INEC doubled down on its disregard for the tenets of our democracy.

We all can see how INEC declared a result in Kogi State where the total number of votes cast is higher than the total number of accredited voters in one local government. We cannot have a healthy democracy in an environment where all INEC does is to deliver for the ruling party at all costs.

That is also why I will urge you all to appeal to lawmakers of the various opposition parties in the National Assembly to sponsor legislation that will advance the course of the constitutional and electoral reforms agenda that I shared in my recent press conference. The issue of electronic voting must be the urgent priority of the National Assembly because countries that are far less advanced than Nigeria are already doing it.”

Nigeria Guild of Editors Hail Governor Umo Eno on ARISE Dividends

The Nigeria Guild of Editors said on Tuesday it was closely following the ARISE agenda of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, saying it had started yielding the targeted dividends.

The NGE President, Mr Eze Anaba, stated this at the Government House during a courtesy visit to the governor ahead of the 19th All Nigerian Editors Conference, scheduled to hold from November 15 to 19, 2013.

While thanking the governor for accepting to host the guild in the state, Anaba lauded the continuum in the government of Akwa Ibom, adding that the development strides of successive governments and the peaceful ambience have undoubtedly made the state a choice destination for all, as demonstrated in the unprecedented number of delegates to the 2023 ANEC.

“We’ve been following your ARISE Agenda, and Akwa Ibom seems to be the only state in Nigeria where there is a continuum in government, and in terms of governance, the government of Akwa Ibom has produced enough for the citizenry.

“So it is now for the people to know what to do with the good governance they’re enjoying,” Anaba said.

Responding, the governor charged the guild to uphold the integrity of the profession by striving to maintain objectivity in their reporting.

Eno also advocated a free press, where journalists can praise, criticise, comment, and advise where necessary without undermining the ethics of the profession, and tasked journalists with being conscious of their sacred responsibility of shaping people’s orientation and social order and being the conscience of society.

In the Nigerian Guild of Editors delegation were: Deputy President Husseina Bangshika; Vice President (East), Sheddy Ozoene; Vice President (West), Kabir Alabi; Vice President (North), Umoru Ibrahim; General Secretary, Iyobosa Uwugiaren; Assistant General Secretary, Gabriel Akinadewo; Treasurer, Steve Nwosu; and Charles Kalu, Social and Publicity Secretary, Samuel Enobong Akpan, GM Inspiration FM among others.

Presidency Condemns Labour Strike, Tag it Unwarranted Blackmail

The Presidency has condemned the planned nationwide strike by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), labelling it an “unwarranted attempt to blackmail the government” over the assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement issued on Monday, expressed the government’s disappointment over the unions’ choice to punish the entire country of over 200 million people over a matter involving the NLC president.

The strike, scheduled to commence on Tuesday, November 14, is in protest of the alleged assault on Ajaero in Owerri, Imo State, last week. However, the government has maintained that the incident is a personal matter and should not be used to justify a nationwide strike.

Onanuga stated that the government does not condone any form of violence or assault on any citizen, but added that the Inspector General of Police has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident and that the Imo State Commissioner of Police, who was in charge at the time of the incident, has been transferred out of the state.

Calling out workers on a national strike over a personal issue of a labour leader despite a clear court order against any industrial action amounts to an abuse of privilege. Power at any level should never be used to settle personal scores. Rather, it should be used to promote collective progress and advance national interests,” Onanuga noted.

He added that the national economy and social activities should not suffer because of the personal interests of any labour leader, stating that “flagrant disobedience to court order” and “lack of respect for the judiciary” should not be what organised labour would champion.

According to the presidential aide, the labour movement has always been a champion of the rule of law and respect for the judiciary, noting that it is a sad irony that the current labour leaders have shown disdain and utter disregard for court orders.

Onanuga, however, reiterates that the strike action is illegal, immoral, unjustifiable and irresponsible.

What the strike notice issued Monday night after official hours suggests is it’s designed for a sinister and hidden agenda to cause undue hardship and cause civil disturbance in our country. This is unacceptable.” he added.

The office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) had recently advised the unions not to strike, urging them to obey the existing court order prohibiting them from embarking on the planned industrial action.

ASUU to Join Nationwide Labour Action

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has directed all its members to join the nationwide industrial action called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

The strike, which is scheduled to begin today, November 14, 2023, is in protest of the recent assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero, who was allegedly assaulted by police officers in Imo State. The unions have accused the Imo State government of being complicit in the attack.

ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke made the announcement in a statement.

Osodeke said that the strike is necessary to “protect the interests of Nigerian workers and the leadership of the union.”

“Zonal Coordinators and Branch Chairpersons should immediately mobilise our members to participate in the action,” Osodeke added.

In a related development, the federal government has condemned the two labour unions’ planned nationwide strike, calling it an “unwarranted attempt to blackmail the government.”

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement, expressed the government’s disappointment with the unions’ decision to punish the entire country of over 200 million people over a matter involving the NLC president.

FG also noted that the national economy and social activities should not suffer because of the personal interests of any labour leader, adding that the strike action is illegal, immoral, unjustifiable and irresponsible.
