Akwa Ibom NUJ Celebrates World Press Freedom Day

the Akwa Ibom State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) joined the international community in commemorating World Press Freedom Day at the weekend, emphasizing the vital role journalists play in promoting democracy and upholding ethical standards in the evolving media landscape shaped by Artificial Intelligence (AI).

This year’s theme, “Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media,” spotlighted the growing influence of AI technologies on journalism practices and press freedom.

Delivering the keynote address at the NUJ Press Centre, Professor PETER ESUH stressed the importance of embracing technological innovation while preserving journalistic integrity. He urged media professionals to adapt to the rapidly changing environment without compromising ethical principles.

Professor ESUH further noted that although technological advancements are inevitable, journalists must position themselves to understand and effectively utilize these tools to enhance their work.

In his remark, NUJ State Chairman, Comrade AMOS ETUK, encouraged journalists to continually upgrade their skills and take the lead in setting industry standards amidst digital transformation.

The event featured a paper presentation, award recognitions, and an engaging interactive session, reflecting the union’s commitment to fostering professional growth and dialogue within the media community.

More Akwa Ibom Residents Cry to Government for Help After Devastating Effects of Rain Storm

Residents of Old Itu Road in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area are appealing to the Akwa Ibom State Government for urgent intervention following a devastating windstorm that ravaged the community, causing widespread destruction.

Among the hardest-hit facilities is the Federal Government College (FGC), Ikot Ekpene, where nearly every structure sustained damage.

A visit to the school revealed extensive destruction of the perimeter fence, hostel blocks as the school’s e-library, staff quarters, dining halls, and classroom blocks.

Speaking with our reporter, JONATHAN ESSIEN, students at the school recounted the terrifying moment the storm struck, describing how the wind tore through the school premises, leaving them shaken and displaced.

Also Speaking on the incident, the PTA chairman, Dr. JOHN EKERETTE ETIM, described the situation as deeply unfortunate and beyond the school’s capacity to resolve alone. He emphasized the need for both state and federal government assistance to restore the school and ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff.

The incident uprooted trees, toppled electricity poles, and inflicted significant damage on homes, farmlands, and public infrastructure.

POPE FRANCIS has been laid to rest at the basilica of Saint MARY major in Rome, in a simple underground tomb with just his papal name: FRANCISCUS.

His funeral today attracted as many as 250,000 people, rich and poor alike, who came to pay their respects.

Cardinal GIOVANNI BATTISTA RE, who eulogized POPE FRANCIS, memorialized him as a pope among the people, with an open heart towards everyone.

After the funeral mass on St Peter’s Square, the pope’s coffin was moved to the Basilica of Saint Mary Major for a private burial.

World leaders, including U.S. President DONALD TRUMP and Argentine President JAVIER MILEI, President of the Nigerian Senate; SEN. GODSWILL AKPABIO, along with royalty, converged on Rome for the funeral.

The Vatican said that 164 delegations are confirmed, including 54 heads of state and 12 reigning sovereigns.

UK Government Deports 43 Nigerians

The United Kingdom has deported 43 Nigerians as part of its latest move to tighten immigration controls.

Among those deported were 15 failed asylum seekers and 11 foreign national offenders who had completed their prison sentences. Additionally, seven others voluntarily left the UK as part of the operation.

The deportation flight forms part of the government’s broader “Plan for Change”, aimed at restoring discipline within the immigration system by ensuring that those without the legal right to remain are swiftly removed.
