Akwa Ibom State Assures Citizens of Effective Security Along The State’s Coastlines

The Akwa Ibom State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring effective security along the State’s vast coastline.

 

This was disclosed by Governor UMO ENO, at the 35th Passing Out Parade of the Nigerian Navy Basic Training School in Onne, Rivers State.

 

Represented by the Deputy Governor, Senator AKON EYAKENYI, Governor ENO said that the recently donated fourteen patrol gun boats to security agencies in the State underscores his administration’s readiness to partnering with the various security agencies, including the Navy, to combat crimes in the waterways.

 

Addressing the trainees, Governor Eno urged them to uphold the tenets of their training and represent the Navy well. He encouraged them to utilise their skills and experiences to contribute to the fight against crimes affecting the country’s coastal regions.

 

On his part, the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. BELLO MUHAMMED MATAWALE, emphasized President TINUBU’s expectation of loyalty and patriotism from the trainees, urging them to develop their competency beyond the camp trainings.

 

While highlighting the importance of the training in enhancing the fight against oil bunkering, pipeline vandalism, human trafficking, and other maritime crimes within Nigeria’s territorial waters and the Gulf of Guinea, the Minister further admonished the trainees to adhere to the principles of the Nigerian Navy.

Harvey Weinstein’s Rape Conviction Overturned for Lack of “Fair Trial”

The case involving a 72 year old Hollywood star, HARVEY WEINSTEIN, who was convicted of rape in Los Angeles in 2020has been overturned in New York on the basis that he did not receive a fair trial.

 

The New York Court of Appeals said prosecutors in the pivotal #MeToo case called witnesses whose accusations were not part of the charges against him.

The decision also said the trial judge compounded the error by letting WEINSTEIN to be cross-examined in a way that portrayed him in a “highly prejudicial” light.

 

While 72 year old WEINSTEIN remains in prison, lawyers for the victims said the decision to retry the case was tragic and a leap backwards.

Federal Government to Integrate More People Into the Banking System

the Federal Government has revealed its plan, to integrate over 20 per cent of unbanked Nigerians into the banking system.

 

Vice President KASHIM SHETTIMA revealed this at the beginning of a two-day National Stakeholders’ Workshop, on Economic and Financial Inclusion in Abuja focusing on how to integrate the unbanked Nigerian population into the formal financial system in Nigeria.

 

SHETTIMA, who noted that over 20 per cent of Nigerians are currently excluded financially, said the government was targeting to reduce that number to a minimum of five per cent.

 

At the event, the 14th Emir of Kano and former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, SANUSI LAMIDO, said banditry and other security challenges in Nigeria can be attributed largely to financial exclusion, as many rural dwellers have no access to efficient payment systems

Akwa Ibom House of Assembly Passes Amended AKISIEC Into Law

Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly (AKHA) has passed amended version of the Independent Electoral Commission Law Cap 69.

 

The Bill for a Law to amend the Independent Electoral Commission had passed through second reading on Friday, 12th April 2024 and was subjected to a Public Hearing on the 16th of April 2024.

 

The Chairman, House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Rt. Hon. MFON IDUNG, informed the House that the Public Hearing made very meaningful inputs which assisted his Committee to arrive at the recommendations.

 

Rt. Hon. IDUNG, who represents Etim Ekpo/Ika State Constituency stated that amendments of the Independent Electoral Commission Law will update the electoral laws in the State in line with modern and acceptable electoral reforms and guidelines.

 

The House thereafter considered the amended Clauses 2,4,5,6,7 and 9 at the Committee of the Whole where the amendments were adopted.

 

The Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Elder) UDEME OTONG, who presided over the plenarydirected the Clerk, MrsNSIKAKABASI OROK to forward the bill to Akwa Ibom State’s Governor UMO ENO for assent into law.
