UK Doctors Begin Strike over State of the National Health Service

Junior hospital doctors in England have begun a five-day strike, a week before a general election citing the state of the publicly funded National Health Service as the major issue.

It follows nearly a dozen similar actions by doctors below the specialist, consultant level over the last 18 months.

The NHS is grappling with a massive backlog caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and exacerbated by the repeated doctors’ strikes. As well as delays to operations and starting cancer treatment, an increasingly dissatisfied public also face long waits to see a doctor at their local surgery.

The doctors have been asking for 35 percent “pay restoration” as a starting position amid a cost-of-living crisis.

Tinubu Nominates Argungu and Others for Police Service Commission

President TINUBU has forwarded the names of three nominees to the senate for confirmation for appointment as Chairman, Secretary and Member of the Police Service Commission (PSC).

The nominees are; Retired Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), HASHIM  ARGUNGU (Chairman), Chief ONYEMA UCHE (Secretary) and Retired DIG TAIWO LAKANU (member) of the PSC respectively.

Recall that President TINUBU had sacked retired Inspector General of Police, SOLOMON ARASE, as the chairman of the commission earlier this month.

This is as the PSC battles the Inspector-General of the Nigerian Police Force, KAYODE EGBETOKUN, over what it termed interference in the recruitment of constables into service, and calling on President TINUBU to sack the IGP, EGBETOKUN.

President TINUBU also urged the Senate to consider and confirm the nomination of Dr OLATUNJI BELLO for appointment, as the Chief Executive Officer/Executive Vice Chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).
