Rivers State To Hold Local Government Elections October 5

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has fixed October 5, 2024, for local government elections in the oil-rich state.

RSIEC chairman, ADOLPHUS ENEBELI announced this during a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt on Monday.

ENEBELI emphasized that it is time to respond to the calls from stakeholders for the conduct of elections following the end of tenure for the previous local government chairmen and councilors.

The announcement comes shortly after Governor SIMINALAYI FUBARA appointed caretaker committee chairmen for the state’s 23 local government areas.

INEC States Conditions to Conduct Local Council Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)has said that the commission has no constitutional power to conduct local council elections except in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Chairman of the commission, Prof. MAHMOOD YAKUBUmade this known on the sidelines of a two-day induction retreat for INEC Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), on Monday in Lagos.

Responding to the agitation seeking constitutional backing for INEC to be saddled with the responsibility of conducting local council elections, YAKUBU described it as ‘a constitutional matter’.

According to YAKUBU, unless necessary constitutional amendments are made, the commission will only continue to organise national and state elections.

Lagos to Receive WHO Support as it Battles Cholera in KiriKiri Prison

The Lagos State Government has said it is receiving additional support from the World Health Organisation – WHO, as it now battles an outbreak of Cholera at the Kirikiri prison.

A statement released by the Director, Public Affairs, TUNBOSUN OGUNBANWO, quoted the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor AKIN ABAYOMI, as saying an outbreak of 25 cases of severe gastroenteritis caused by Cholera occurred at Kirikiri Medium Security Prison, adding that urgent medical and environmental intervention measures have been implemented with success.

Professor ABAYOMI while providing further updates on the cholera outbreak following the One Health Inter-governmental agency strategic meeting, revealed that although no new cholera-related deaths have been reported in the last 72 hours, the government was intensifying countermeasures to completely eliminate transmission.

University Don Calls For Development Plan For Akwa Ibom, Nigeria Beyond 2050

A University Don, Professor OTOABASI AKPAN has advocated for a sustainable development plan for Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria that will span beyond 2050.

Professor AKPAN made the call as part of recommendations during the 5th Inaugural lecture of Akwa Ibom State University at the Main Campus of the University in Ikot Akpaden, with the topic: ‘Thinking the Thinkable for Gatekeepers at Gatehouse: Integrated Security Doctrine and Emerging Threats in Nigeria’.

AKPAN who was the inaugural lecturer on the occasion, said it was imperative for Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria to consciously strategize for a long term development plan for the state and national respectively, which he said should be devoid of politics or any sort of interest.

On the need to sustain historical heritages, Professor AKPAN stressed the need for Akwa Ibom to consider establishing a Heritage Development Commission, which will be saddled with the development of heritages domiciled in the state.
