Federal Government Lists More Flood Prone States, Warns Against Worsening Cholera

The Federal Government of Nigeria has warned that the increasing level of flooding and continuous rainfall may worsen the spread of cholera in the country.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, JOSEPH TERLUMUM raised the concern while addressing a press conference on Thursday.

According to him, a total of 63 deaths and 2,102 suspected cases have already been recorded as of Wednesday, 3rdJuly, 2024, since the outbreak of the epidemic.

Recent incessant rains have resulted in floods in some states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), a situation that prompted the minister to call on state governments across the country to intensify efforts in clearing drainages.

The draw for the 2025 AFCON will be conducted in South Africa’s commercial and economic capital, Johannesburg.

The Director of Communications at the Nigeria Football Federation, ADEMOLA OLAJIRE disclosed this in a statement in Abuja, noting that the draw will serve the 48 countries into 12 groups of four teams each.

The qualifying matches will be played over the FIFA windows of September, October and November this year.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles have been placed in Pot one ahead of the draw ceremony. Also in pot one are; hosts Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Cote d’Ivoire, Tunisia, Algeria, Cameroon, Mali, South Africa, DR Congo and Ghana.

INEC Bemoans Attack of its Office in Benue

The office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Sankara, the headquarters of Ukum Local Government Area in Benue State has been attacked and burnt by protesting youths.

 

The National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, SAM OLUMEKUN confirmed the attack in a statement.

 

According to the statement, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for the state, Prof. SAM EGWU noted that the attack occurred at 2 pm yesterday as youths protested against the activities of bandits in the area.

 

The protest escalated to include the destruction of several government facilities, including the INEC office. While no casualties have been reported, the damage to the building was said to be extensive.

NCDC Give Cholera Updates, as Death Toll hits 63

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention – NCDC has revealed that Nigeria has recorded over 2,100 suspected cases of Cholera outbreak across 33 states of the federation.

 

According to the centre, this marks a significant increase from the 1,579 cases reported just a week ago, highlighting the rapid spread of the disease.

 

Briefing journalists on the measures deployed against the outbreak, the NCDC Director General, JIDE IDRIS put the case fatality rate at 3.0 percent, noting that the cases were recorded as of June 30th, 2024.

 

According to IDRIS, Lagos, Bayelsa, Abia, Zamfara, Bauchi, Katsina, Cross River, Ebonyi, Rivers and Delta State contributed about 90 per cent of the cases.

 

The Director General identified inadequate toilet facilities, poor sanitation and inadequate safe water as factors militating against cholera eradication in the country, adding that the recently activated National Cholera Multisectoral Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) is providing strategic coordination.
