Taiwan and Nigeria to Renew Trade Agreements

Nigeria and Taiwan are set to sign a bilateral contract to boost the volume of trade between the two countries, which currently stands at 400million dollars.

Chief of Taiwan Mission at the Taipei Trade Office in Nigeria, Andy Yih-Ping Liu stated that the trade volume has enormous potential for growth as many Taiwanese investors are waiting for the renewal of bilateral agreement, which would provide a legal framework for the protection of investments.

Liu disclosed that a proposal had been sent to President Bola Tinubu on the need to renew the agreement to boost Nigerian-Taiwan relations.

He also said while the trade volume of $400m is infinitesimal compared to the $226bn with China, it can be improved upon with the renegotiation of the bilateral relation, which has been pending for the past 34 years.

Federal Government to Deny JAMB Budget Grant

The Senate and House of Representatives have agreed that the Federal Government’s 2025 budget grant will not be received by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB.

The upper chamber who faulted the board’s financial management argued that it is unjustifiable for JAMB to remit N4 billion to the federation account while receiving 6 billion naira from the government in 2024.

This decision followed a presentation by JAMB Registrar, Ishaq Oloyede, before the joint committee of the Senate and House of Representatives, Senator Sani Musa during an interactive session on revenue projections for 2025.

Musa who responded to Oloyede’s claim questioned the JAMB Registrar over the rationale behind funding a self-sustaining agency with government grants.

However, Musa highlighted the Senate’s deep concern over the significant gap between the substantial revenues accrued by these agencies and their consistently low remittances to the federation account.

He pointed out that this discrepancy hampers the government’s ability to fund critical infrastructure projects and social services, raising issues of inefficiency, mismanagement, and potential revenue leakages.
