July 8, 2024 President Tinubu Re-Elected ECOWAS Chair

President BOLA TINUBU has been re-elected as the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), about one year after he took over the leadership of the regional bloc.

President TINUBU, whose first tenure is to elapse on July 9, 2024, was elected by a unanimous decision of fellow Heads of Government at the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority.

The President who accepted his re-election, appointed the President of Senegal, BASSIROU DIOMAYEFAYE to join in the mediation with Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad.

He also urged member states of the regional bloc to make financial commitments to help in the fight against terrorism in the region.

Also speaking at the event, the president of the ECOWAS Commission, OMAR TOURAY informed the gathering of a proposal for a special extraordinary session to consider the future of the regional body.

The 65th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
