June 2, 2025 Akwa Ibom Residents Applaud NCC for Charge to TELCOs on Service Disruption

Residents of Uyo Metropolis have commended the directive issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which mandates telecom operators to notify users about major service disruptions.

NCC, in a move aimed at boosting transparency and accountability across the sector, had last week, introduced new rules requiring operators to notify consumers of major network outages and compensate users when service disruptions exceed 24 hours.

Under the new regulations, mobile network operators, internet service providers, and other last-mile service providers must inform consumers of major outages via media channels.

Speaking with Inspiration FM’s correspondents NOENYEUBONG ANDEM and PRECIOUS OFFOR on the development, the Residents expressed frustration over frequent network outages, commending theNigeria’s telecoms regulator for issuing the directives.

According to reports, MTN and Airtel reported five and four incidents, respectively, with disruptions linked to fibre damage in states such as Akwa Ibom,Benue, Imo, Bayelsa, and Abia.

The Uyo Residents emphasized that the disclosure of the cause of the outage, affected areas, and the estimated time for service restoration will help consumers prepare well and not be stranded.
