April 15, 2025 Residents of Uyo React to Threat by Generating Companies to Shut Down Power Over Debt

Residents of Uyo have expressed deep concern following the recent threats by electricity generation companies (Gencos) to shut down operations due to the Federal Government’s outstanding debt exceeding four trillion naira.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the GenCos, Rtd. COLONEL SANI BELLO, had made threats known to journalists in Abuja, lamenting that the mounting liabilities were crippling their ability to operate and threatening a total shutdown of electricity generation in Nigeria.

Speaking with INSPIRATION FM News, the Residents said they are hopeful that resolution will be reached to avert the power crisis and ensure the continued supply of electricity to the country.

GenCoshad noted that the 2025 national budget’s 900 billion naira allocation for the power sector is grossly inadequate to address those arrears and sustain future payments. The GenCos also highlight the sharp decline in collection rates— below 30 percent in 2024— which they say has worsened the liquidity crisis.
