The Senate Committee on Works has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the slow pace of work on the Eleme-Ogoni axis of the East-West Road in Rivers State, describing the project as nearly abandoned despite multiple fund releases.
During Day 2 of the committee’s oversight visit to ongoing federal road projects in the state, the lawmakers inspected the Eleme bridge and surrounding areas, where they were visibly dismayed by the lack of progress and safety measures. Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, Senator BARINADA MPIGI, who led the inspection, criticized the contractors, RCC for the situation.
Members of the Senate Committee on Works inspect the progress of work on the Eleme-Ogoni axis of the East-West Road in Rivers State. The Senator lamented that despite several billions of naira disbursed to the company, there is little to show for it.
He further raised safety concerns, recalling tragic incidents that have occurred on the Eleme Bridge. He also emphasized the need for contingency planning on such a critical project.
The committee has, therefore, asked the Secretary to mandate that the Managing Director of RCC and relevant authorities in the Ministry of Works be present on site on their next inspection date next month and explain the status of the project.
