With just two days to Christmas, residents of Uyo metropolis have expressed their dismay over the increasing cost of living, which they say has drastically altered the way they celebrate the festive season.
For years, Christmas has been a time of joy, family gatherings, and community spirit, but now, the case is different, as Citizens now say that the once festive atmosphere has been overshadowed by economic hardship.
Our correspondent ENDURANCE OKON reports that major markets and shopping centers in Uyo are currently experiencing a stark contrast to previous years, with many shelves looking bare and shop owners struggling to attract customers. The prices of food, clothing, and gifts have soared, leaving many families unable to afford the usual Christmas feasts and celebrations they once enjoyed.
According to market reports, the prices of essential items like rice, poultry, and cooking oil have increased by over 50% this year. Similarly, the cost of transportation has risen sharply, making travel between states and towns a luxury many can no longer afford.
Speaking with our reporter, JOY UDOH, residents of Uyo recalled Christmas seasons of the past, when they could buy enough food to feed the entire family and even share with neighbours, stressing that this year, it feels like are they just scraping.
Despite the challenges, some have tried to hold on to the festive spirit, with some of the residents stressing the need to focus on what they can still cherish this season: community, family, and the enduring hope that better days lie ahead.
Economic analysts attribute the high cost of living to a combination of inflation, fuel price hikes, and supply chain disruptions. These factors they claimed have combined to create a perfect storm that has squeezed household budgets and left people struggling to make ends meet.
