Former Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Senator Representing Edo North senatorial district in the National Assembly, Senator ADAMS OSHOMOLE has said the local government autonomy is sacrosanct and must be upheld.
He made the assertion during a dialogue organised by the House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution government autonomy today Monday, December 2, 2024.
OSHOMOLE said the funds for local government would not be misappropriated as speculated by many, if the full financial autonomy is granted to the 774 local government councils.
The Deputy Speaker of the House and Chairman of the Committee, BENJAMIN KALU, in his address stated that the national dialogue aimed to consolidate ideas for a robust discourse on the independence of local government administration in Nigeria.
The Deputy Speaker added that the committee would commence zonal public hearings in January 2025.
