In the meantime, the Uyo Capital City Development Authority – UCCDA has demolished a two-storey building under construction by the Nwaniba Water Fountain, Uyo.
Our correspondent, ENDURANCE OKON, who was present at the scene of the demolition, reports that the operation caused traffic disruptions, forcing vehicles to move against the usual flow of traffic. Officers of the Nigeria Police Force were on ground to maintain order and ensure that residents observed the operation from a safe distance.
According to an eyewitness, the building—situated near the Water Fountain area—was pulled down after an inspection uncovered major violations of building regulations.
Meanwhile, the UCCDA in a statement made available to Inspiration FM, noted that the demolition became necessary after multiple warnings and markings were issued, indicating the building’s lack of approval.
The Authority in the statement established that it had earlier denied approval for the project due to several violations of critical town planning regulations, including failure to maintain the required setback from a high-tension power line and presence of a telecommunication mast behind the building.
In addition, it was noted that the structure was erected without any engagement with UCCDA, a move the agency described as a blatant act of impunity.
UCCDA, therefore emphasized that without proper approval, the structural stability of the building could not be guaranteed, prompting its demolition to safeguard public safety.
The Authority reiterated its commitment to enforcing planning standards and warned developers to seek necessary approvals before commencing any construction, to avoid similar actions.
The agency added that the demolition serves as a stern reminder of UCCDA’s zero-tolerance policy on illegal construction.
