A construction worker with Benest Engineering Ltd, is reported to have died along Urua Ekpa community in Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State when the underground drainage system under construction collapsed.

Witnesses at the scene said the worker’s name; Marvelous, was  buried under the rubble at the site of the underground drainage system.

On a Visit to the site, Our Correspondent Adebayo Samuel observed that the structure had collapsed under the weight and vibration of motorized equipment that was supplying chipping stones close to the underground drain, where the victim, a mason , was trapped, while he was trying to pour the cement and concrete mixture in the construction of the underground water tunnel

They blamed human error coupled with the poor rescue operation, as cause the death. Youths were said to have manually worked with shovels  to dig through the debris, as the Construction company could not immediately bring an excavator.

The Construction company has since left the site, as angry community youths threatened action over the loss.

Efforts to reach the company liason officer proved abortive as the spokesman insisted that the Family of the mason was being contacted for compensation, and organizing a befitting burial. When asked about the state of safety at the site in particular and other construction sites generally, representatives insisted that they were up to date on all health and safety protocols.
