September 22, 2021 Expert Warns Akwa Ibom Farmers Against Bird Flu

The outbreak of avian influenza otherwise known as Bird Flu in poultry farms across some states in the country has called for a more systematic approach to curb its spread and reach, to unaffected states.

The disease which is widely spread through contact; human or animal, has been described as one without a cure, hence the need to pay closer attention to its spread.

To this end, farmers in Akwa Ibom state have been cautioned against buying birds from states with a clear record of the disease, or even neighboring ones, as doing so could endanger poultry farms in the state and stir an outbreak.

An Uyo based Veterinary doctor, Dr. UBONG OFFIONG, in an interview with Inspiration 105.9 FM shed more light on the disease. He said an outbreak in any farm in the state could cause severe downturn for the poultry business, as such farms will need to be shut to avoid further spread.

Dr. OFFIONG advised farmers in the poultry business to avoid buying their birds from the affected states as it is one of the easiest ways by which it can get into the state.

He added that asides halting the purchase of birds from affected states, farmers must also endeavor to maintain proper hygienic conditions in their farms.
