Rivers Cross As Plateau Falls in Libya in CAF Confederations Cup

The Pride of Rivers, Rivers United will be Nigeria’s sole representative on the continent of Africa this season, after securing a 1-all draw against Libyan opponents Al-Nasr in the CAF Confederations cup playoffs. The reverse was the case however as Plateau United, could not hold on to their 1st Leg win over Al-Khader, conceding 3 unreplied goals to submit their 4-1 advantage, thereby dropping out of the continent. Plateau United gaffer, Fidelis Ilechukwu had bemoaned the goal conceeded in Abuja in the home leg, complaining about the quality of play of the Peace boys ahead of the return leg in Libya. Although fraught with all the shenanigans that North African sides are known for, Plateau United seemed to have held on after a goalless first half. Al Khader broke the deadlock in the 58 minute and continued to pile on the pressure for more goals, before adding a 2nd late into the fixture, the 3rd and decisive goal that meant Plateau dropped out was scored in the final minute of regulation time, which mean’t Al Khader of Libya progressed on away goal rule. Stanley Eguma and his lads on the other hand already had their job cut out for them having secured a 5-nil victory in Port Harcourt, they knew what needed to be done and kept the focus despite all the drama that heralded their arrival in Benghazi. They conceded in the first half but came back strong in the second half to secure a draw, as Nyima Nwagua restored parity for the port harcourt side. 1-1 it ended and a spot in the group stages guaranteed for the Nigerian side. Nigeria’s coefficient continues to drop on the continent of Africa however, as NPFL clubsides continually fail to make the mark in CAF competitions.
