Lewis Hamilton leads the race for Abu Dhabi

Lewis Hamilton was fastest in both practice sessions at the start of the weekend that will decide the 2016 Formula 1 World Championship.

The Briton led title rival and Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg by 0.079 seconds in the second session at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina track, having been 0.374secs quicker in first practice. Lewis Hamilton says he is desperate to take pole position for Sunday’s title-deciding Abu Dhabi Grand Prix,

The defending champion, said his sole focus until Sunday is getting the pole position at the start of the race to ensure he puts his best foot forward

He added: “Right now, I don’t have to think about the race. Positioning is what I want this weekend.”

To take the title, he needs to win and hope Rosberg is lower than third.

Briton Hamilton trails Rosberg by 12 points heading into the race and, given Mercedes’ dominance this season, realistically has to hope his German rival hits trouble of one kind or another so other teams manage to get their cars between them.
